3 Tartu University during the Swedish time 1632-1710 Tartu University has got quite a long history. During the Swedish times the studies were in Latin and students could learn Philosophy, Law, Theology and Medicine Estonian peasants couldn’t study there. Due to Nordic War the university was closed for almost 100 years. No buildings have preserved from that time.

7 Two most prominent Estonian students were Dr. Faehlmann and Dr *Kreutzwald*. Over the time the number of Estonian students grew and in 1884 the Estonian Students’ Society was established. Since then most Estonian political and cultural leaders have got their higher education there.
