3 WHAT IS FWS? Federal work study is a type of federal financial aid. The Office of Student Financial Assistance decides if you’re eligible for federal work study. You’re given the opportunity to get a part-time job (“FWS job”) and earn extra money. It is optional. If you don’t work; you don’t get the money

6 HOW DO I FIND A FWS JOB? 1. View jobs online through GWork 2. Attend the FWS Job Fair 3. Contact on-campus departments 4. Follow Student Employment on Facebook & Twitter

7 WHERE CAN I WORK? ON CAMPUS: any hiring department OFF-CAMPUS: selected non- profit/government organizations around DC Metro area. OFF-CAMPUS: as a literacy tutor at selected sites through GW’s CCEPS

8 HOW ARE FWS STUDENTS HIRED? FWS Program Runs From August 30 th -April 23 rd To be employed by GW you MUST complete the following: Background Check Offer Letter I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification: required by federal law ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/acceptable-documents Federal + local tax forms: call home! Direct Deposit forms

9 HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU WORK? You & your employer decide your work schedule Take into consideration your class schedule Consider your FWS award amount Most freshmen work 8-10 hours per week

10 FWS Earnings Employer sets hourly wage. You can earn up to – but not over – the amount of your FWS award. FWS students are paid on a bi-weekly basis. Money will come directly to you. FWS earnings are your income; how you choose to spend your money is up to you. FWS checks DO NOT cover a remaining tuition balance. You must report your hours to get paid!

11 HOW CAN THE CENTER FOR CAREER SERVICES HELP? Online: Resume, Cover Letter, Interview Help Drop-in: Colonial Crossroads, MC 505 Appointments: Schedule through GWork * We don’t find the job for you – you do that, and acquire skills you’ll be using for the rest of your life.

12 Student Employee Excellence Program (SEEP) SEEP is designed for future GW student employees to prepare for the workplace to help make the connection between work, academics, and career development. Online workshops and in-person discussions and events held both pre-employment and during employment.
