3 The Gauteng Dance Manyano was formed on the 04th June 2001 as an intervention to create a dance network of choreographers, teachers, companies, dancers and schools etc. This was inspired by the immaculate enthusiasm and commitment that dance initiatives in Gauteng demonstrated in their varying interventions for the development of dance talent and culture. With this in mind, the Gauteng Dance Manyano set out to embark on creating opportunities for development of professional and emerging dance artists, groups, companies and practitioners through hosting and facilitating dance workshops and performance programmes. Gauteng Dance Manyano has initiated several programmes across the Gauteng Province such as, choreographic and arts management workshops. Through these it has been able to harness skills and create job opportunities for young and emerging choreographers and administrators. This contributes to the overall arts industry and not dances alone. In addition to the above, the Gauteng Dance Manyano has also initiated performance platforms, which have significantly benefited participating community dance groups and professional companies operating around Gauteng. These include, the Ballet Theatre Afrikan, Tribanghi Dance Theatre, Soweto Dance Project, Moving Into Dance Mophatong wa Thabo etc. Through the above, the Gauteng Dance Manyano has also in return gained further recognition and respect in the dance industry, which has enabled the organisation to grow stronger. This recognition is evidenced through the relationships, partnerships and collaborations that it has formed with several likewise establishments, dance festivals, producers and presenters operating in the main stream such as, the International Arts Alive Festival, Joburg Carnival, Gauteng Carnival and the Gauteng Province Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

4 The project plan is for the implementation of the Soweto Carnival, under the banner Soweto Carnival 2010 and driven by the theme “Mzansi’s Legacy” in promoting 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Soweto is the furnace of contemporary South African Culture; driven by a vibrant youth whose culture and ideology has influence the whole of South Africa. Such influences well articulated in the music [kwaito], street language [tsotsi tal] and dance [pantsula]. The Soweto Carnival 2010, which is earmarked to take place on the 9 th July 2010 to coincide with the 2010 Soccer World Cup, will form part of the Soweto Festival showcase, and as such for all intent and purposes forms an integral part of the Dance Manyano Season and Masakhane Arts and Culture Festival.

5 The background and history of the Soweto Carnival is one which is very rich and befit celebrating, having given birth to other now notable carnivals, such as the Joburg Carnival and the Gauteng Carnival. Further the idea of choosing Soweto is very attractive in that it that part of the city which has hosted and given birth to a number of artists in spheres of the arts in South Africa, carnival arts inclusive. Further, over and above being place of residence and birth of some of the high profile figures who have played pivotal role in the sporting, political and economical sphere in the Republic, and some have had their names engraved in the sporting hall of fame as sports icons of note. The carnival will be a one-day event, however leading towards delivery there will be about three to four months of planning, training, pre-production, production and marketing that will be undertaken. In that period the whole of Soweto and indeed Joburg will be buzzing with the carnival fever. Come 05 th June 2010, it is envisaged that the procession will be a showcase of flamboyancy in; colour, costumes design, larger than life mobile structures, floats and musical dressed trucks. This will be in the spirit of creating an atmosphere of celebrating the diversity in cultures, artistic expression, and indeed the South African Heritage.

6 To revitalize the Soweto Carnival To position the carnival arts as an art form that can augment the activities of the 2010 Soccer World Cup To establish the Soweto Carnival as the Heritage Day celebration platform, now forward. Cultivate Carnival Arts business and attract tourist to Soweto.
