Content Solar System song Sun Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Home Click on the Solar System Song to link to a video about the planets. Click on a planet to begin exploring the solar system

Information * While visiting other planet, we will learn why we can’t live on that planet. * Know which planets belongs to the rock family and the gas family. * Know that all planet have a day and a night. * Learn how long it takes for the planet to travel around the sun. * Have a class activity. Select a student to be the sun and then select another to be a planet and so on till all the planets are in place. Then have them revolve around the sun. This will give the students a visual of the solar system and a fun activity to participate in as well. Home

Sun * The sun is a star, not a planet * The sun is the center of the solar system * The sun keeps us warm and helps life on earth. * It helps us know the difference between day and night Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Mercury * Is the closest planet to the sun * It is in the Rock family of planets * Is the smallest planet and has no moon * One day on this planet is 58 ½ Earth days * Takes 88 days to go around the sun Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Venus Storm clouds covering Venus * Earth’s sister planet * It is in the Rock family * Storm clouds cover it surface * One day on this planet is 243 Earth days * Takes 225 days to go around the sun Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Earth * This is the planet we live on * It is part of the rock family * The surface is mostly covered with water and that is why you see mostly blue. * It take 365 days to go around the sun * One day on this planet is 24 hours Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Mars * Is known as the red planet * Has the largest mountains in the solar system * It is part of the rock family * It takes 687 days to go around the sun * One day on this planet is 24 hours 37 minutes Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Jupiter * Is the biggest planet in the solar system. * This is a gas planet * It has many moons * It takes 4332 days to go around the sun. * One day on this planet is 9 hours and 55 minutes Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Saturn * The rings that circle the planet are made of ice * This is a gas planet * This planet has many moons * It takes10,759 days to go around the sun * One day on this planet is 10 hours and 13 minutes Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Uranus * This planet spins on it side, like a bowling ball * It has rings that circle the planet. The rings are made up of black dust and rock. The rings are hard to see. * This is a gas planet * It takes 30,684 days to go around the sun * One day on this planet is 17 hours Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Neptune *T*T his is the furthest planet from the sun. *T*T his is a gas planet. *I*I t is a very windy and stormy planet *I*I t takes 60,190 days to go around the sun *O*O ne day on this planet is 16 hours and 17 minutes Click on the space ship to take you back to the planets Home

Assignment * Put students in groups. Have the group pick their favorite planet. Create a power point about the planet to show the class. * Have the student pick their favorite planet. Have them draw their planet and write a story about an adventure they took to their planet. They can share it with the class. Home

Core Standards Subject Science- 1st grade Standard 2 Earth and Space Science. Students will gain an understanding of Earth and Space Science through the study of earth materials, celestial movement, and weather. Objective 2 * Observe and describe the changes and appearance of the sun and moon during daylight. * Observe and chart the moon when it is visible during the day. Home
