HANNAH LUPIEN POLICY DIRECTOR WEST SIDE CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER Working in Coalition in NYS to Protect and Preserve SNAP

West Side Campaign Against Hunger Mission Through a supermarket-style food pantry, West Side Campaign Against Hunger alleviates hunger and creates a culture that promotes self- reliance and works for change. West Side Campaign Against Hunger changes our perception of hungry people by working in partnership with them, providing food with dignity, and empowering customers to find solutions.

2014 Pantry Achievements In our customer-choice pantry, we provided healthy food for 1,105,000 meals to 122,000 people.

2014 Pantry Achievements We distributed 1.5 million pounds of food.

Our counselors helped draw down over $5.5 million in public benefits for our customers. 2014 Social Service Achievements

We enrolled 531 families in Food Stamps and 431 in Medicaid and other insurance.

2014 Advocacy Achievements In New York, Albany and Washington DC, we supported campaigns for universal free lunch in schools and increased public support for low-income families, including SNAP.

Advocacy Principles FOOD:  WSCAH believes in access to healthy food for all people. We believe that the opposite of hunger is not fullness, but health. INCOME:  WSCAH believes that the most dignified and empowering solution to hunger is income generation. With a living wage job or living benefit our customers will become self-sufficient and phase out of the emergency food system. HOUSING:  WSCAH believes that adequate housing is a human necessity, and no person should be forced to choose between food and shelter. HEALTH CARE:  WSCAH believes that health care is a human right, not a privilege. Prevention of illness is the primary goal both because it will prevent human suffering and be fiscally responsible in the long term.
