28 College Admission Tests  ACT & SAT All four-year colleges and universities in the US accept both tests Some prefer one over the other Schools will use the better set of scores for admissions Students can take both tests as many times as they want  The ACT is the most common test in Utah  The difference between the ACT and SAT ACT – Based on high school curriculum SAT – Based on critical thinking and problem solving skills Planning for College Guidebook – Page 29

30 What is the Regents’ Scholarship? The Regents’ Scholarship is a scholarship available to all Utah students that complete the Utah Scholars curriculum and scholarship guidelines. The scholarship may be used at any public college or university in the Utah System of Higher Education, as well as at Brigham Young University-Provo, LDS Business College, and Westminster College.

32 + Regents’ Scholarship Qualifications For Each Reward 1. Max. value $1000 one-time payment 2. Utah Scholars Curriculum 9-12 3. Cumulative 3.0 GPA 4. No grade lower that a “C” 5. One report of ACT test score Base Award Exemplary Academic Achievement 1. Flat dollar – Varies yearly ($1,100 per semester) 2. Core course of study during 9-12 3. Cumulative 3.5 GPA 4. No grade lower than a “B” 5. Have an ACT score of 26

33 + Regents’ Scholarship  The Regents’ Scholarship is modified each year as a result of annual legislative funding and total number of qualified participants.  Funding levels beyond Spring semester 2014 are unknown.  Beginning Fall semester 2013, students are required to enroll in and successfully complete 15 credit hours and earn a 3.3 semester GPA each semester they receive the scholarship renewable up to four semesters.  Students apply by February 1 st of their senior year.  A deferment application is used by a student that has applied for the scholarship, but will not attend college the Fall semester after high school.  Student must apply for a deferment in order to put the scholarship “on hold”.

35 Foreign Language Requirement  Olympus High School – not required to graduate from high school  University of Utah – 2 years are required during grades 7-12 Level 1 and Level 2 of the same foreign language  Regents’ Scholarship – 2 years are required during grades 9-12 Progressive credits of the same foreign language  Some but not all out-of-state colleges require or recommend 2 or 4 years of foreign language Check the website of the college of your choice Foreign language makes an academic schedule more rigorous
