2 Teacher Web Sites How are teacher or school Web sites utilized?

3 Basic Principles Websites should be informative for both current and prospective students (Cavanaugh & Cavanaugh, 2002) Websites should be encoded for meaning rather than appearance (Pugalee & Bray, 2003) Websites should be able to be utilized by their students, parents, administration, community and teachers (Badner, 2004)

4 Frequently cited purposes for a classroom website related to parental communication: Provide general information for parents Communicate regularly updated information Increase parental involvement Provide teacher contact information Publish a record of major events/projects Calendars Policies & procedures Forms

5 Teacher websites allow users to Integrate technology into teaching/learning –Links to online educational resources with, instructions and descriptions for the online educational resources –Provide information on homework/classwork, including due dates, dates assigned, instructions on what to do, and how the work will be assessed.

6 Purposes related to enhancing student learning. Facilitate collaborative groups within your classroom Allow access to student grades Fulfill an expectation of administration Provide a competitive edge to your school/classroom Share personal information about yourself

7 Three Main Barriers Access to software. Perception that parents will not be able to access Internet. Lack of time.

8 The most frequently cited concerns: Student safety on the Internet Copyright compliance Having working and up-to-date technology in school Keeping links on the site relevant and working Ensuring the site works on a variety of computers and browsers

9 Research Findings 30% of families are using website Most popular pages are: student page and sports page Of the 30% who use the website 71% find the website beneficial and useful Suggestions made for improvement by these families are: –Current events –Upcoming events –Programs –Homework assignments –Grades –Student names –Music –Educational games 26% of families use the classroom website Of the 26% who utilized the website 100% of them found the website beneficial and useful Suggestions made for improvement by these families are: –Educational games –Grades –Names of students who are being successful in the teachers class School Website Teacher Website

10 Research shows that school & classroom websites should be available Researcher found that in this inner city school, families who utilize the sites found them beneficial Question of the have and have not's is still an issue in this inner city school 60% of the 23 families that completed the survey have a computer with Internet access Only three families utilize email communication with teacher Researcher has found having a classroom website has increased her communication efficiency with students and parents Prediction: If more families have computers with Internet access in their home then the websites would be utilized more than they currently are being utilized
