An Art Medium In art a medium is a material that an artist uses to create his or her artwork. Medium is the singular form and media is the plural form of the word. There are a wide variety of art media including pencil, pen, watercolor, acrylic, oil, stone, and steel to name a few.
Drawing Drawing is the basic and most common art media. The main Drawing media are pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastel. Each of these media have their own special characteristics.
Pencil Pencil is the most common and available drawing medium. Pencils are used for making quick sketches or fine detailed drawings. They are easy to use and allow the artist to blend and shade easily
Charcoal Charcoal is a medium used by most artist to create quick sketches or drawings. Charcoal is very similar to chalk. It leaves a fine dust as you draw with it. It is very good for shading and blending.
Pen and Ink Pen and Ink is used to create detailed drawings. There are several pen and ink techniques: hatching, cross hatching, stippling and ink washes.
Pastel Pastels come in two forms chalk and oil pastels. Chalk pastels are dry and similar to charcoal. They are good for colorful drawings. They blend well but are messy because of the dust they leave behind. Oil pastels are oil based and can be applied thickly. They are easy to blend. Oil pastels can be used with mineral spirits to create images similar to oil paintings.
