3 Veteran Student Information Students receiving Veteran benefits must:  Pursue either a degree OR certificate or,  Provide justification and obtain approval if seeking to pursue both a degree and certificate OR a dual major  Follow their program checksheets and take only required courses for their degree or certificate ( http://www.azwestern.edu/learning_services/degrees_and_certificates /) http://www.azwestern.edu/learning_services/degrees_and_certificates /  Have military transcripts sent in and evaluated before taking any general electives ( http://jst.doded.mil ) http://jst.doded.mil  Keep their majors up-to-date and inform Veteran Services of all changes in enrollment

4 Veteran Student Information  Submit a new Benefits Certification Request when there are changes in enrollment  Take required courses under 100 level in- person only (i.e. ENG 080 or Mat 081, etc.)  Provide a last date of attendance and reason for all withdrawals

5 The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees/majors in one specific area while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the Business College. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known. 6 CERTIFICATES Certificate programs are designed to upgrade existing skills or provide competencies for employment. DEGREES Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree can prepare students for entry into a specific occupational area or prepare them for a BAS – Bachelor in Applied Science, an occupational transfer degree program at the university. Transfer Associate Degrees are designed to enable a student to TRANSFER to a university in order to pursue a 4yr-Bachelor’s Degree. 9 Military and Other Transcripts  All Military transcripts and transcripts from other colleges and universities must be submitted to AWC for evaluation  Your enrollment will not be certified to the VA if your transcripts are not received by AWC  For many students, General Electives are usually covered by incoming credits  Financial Aid has up to a 30 credit hour forgiveness for military credits transferred to the college

General Education part of the AS degree Associate of Applied Science *AAS... Each Associate of Applied Science major may have different prescribed General Education requirements. Associate of General Studies AGS... Associate of General Studies Degree has it’s own unique General Education requirements. *General Education *General Education is a set of core and prescribed course of studies in higher education that are fundamental to a well-rounded college and university education. General Education courses are across disciplines allowing students to gain interdisciplinary understanding, and attain a broad range of skills and knowledge. * See Your Advising Worksheet

12 AGEC-A, AGEC-B, AGEC-S The General Education for the transfer degrees (AA, AS, ABus) is known as... AGEC-A, AGEC-B, AGEC-S  English 101 and 102 Two classes (6 credits)  Mathematics (AS and ABus have different and higher level math required) At least one class (3 – 5 credits)  Arts At least one class (3 credits)  Humanities At least one class (3 credits)  Social / Behavioral Science At least two classes (6 – 9 credits)  Physical or Biological Science (AS has higher level science required) two classes (8 credits)  Additional AGEC courses (Each degree has additional unique requirements) Total of *35 – 39 credits

Check your major on Web- Advisor and let an advisor or Registration Office know if you want to change your major.

14 Enrollment Changes **EXTREMELY IMPORTANT**  Please keep all information up-to-date and inform Veteran Services Office of all changes including:  Change in Major or Program  Change in Classes  Change in Personal Information  Other Changes that may affect your benefits Submit a new Benefits Certification Request with any change in enrollment.

20 Things to consider... Grade of “C” or better required for graduation or transfer Know the Drop/Add week and last day to withdraw Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA Only repeat required courses with grades of “D” or “F” Grade of “No Show” will require payment Face-to-Face vs. Online Classes Remember, any required developmental course under 100- level must be taken face-to-face (i.e. MAT 071 or ENG 080, etc.) STICK TO THE PLAN (Program Checksheet) Full-time or Part-time Normally,12 + credits is considered full-time but double check Full-time may vary by department (i.e. Financial aid) Monthly Benefit might be affected if not full-time Know Your Benefits – Different rules for different chapters Create a schedule that helps you be successful Balance Obligations (work, family, friends, church, etc) Study Time (1 cr hr = 2 hrs study and 1 hour of outside research) Creating your Schedule

22 Planning for Success Planning for Success How to manage your new college schedule: Develop a calendar w/ plenty of time to study. Talk to your family, employer and friends about your new commitment of college and its priority in your life. If you are a parent, make arrangements for child care. Also, talk to your children about what your going to college will mean to them. Plan Ahead: Know your VA Chapter, Know your benefits Keep “Satisfactory Progress” with your Financial Aid Talk to each of your instructors early in the semester. Go to the Success Center for FREE tutoring Take advantage of any workshops or events on campus.
