4 Some Restrictions on the Media The Right to Equal Time: “If a station gives or sells time during an election campaign to one candidate for a specific office, it must make the same opportunity available to candidates for that office, including those with few backers” (p. 59) The Right to Fair Treatment – It mandates that opposing views should be heard on controversial issues. It was suspended in 2000 The Right of Rebuttal – landmark case: Red Lion Broadcasting Co. vs. Federal Communications Commission Court ruled that individuals get free cost of rebuttal when they are maligned

6 Examples of places where media is not invited/allowed: Some White House and State Department meetings Some pre-trial hearings and grand jury proceedings determines whether evidence justifies indictments Conferences of Supreme Court where the decide which cases to hear Some legislative sessions Sites of crimes and disasters when public is not permitted Interviewing and filming prison inmates Combat Zones
