4 How can you prepare ? What to bring in with you :  Toiletries  Dressing gown  Slippers with backs  Small travel clock  Mobile phone  All medications in their original containers © Spire Healthcare

5 …more to bring in  Flat shoes with backs ideally slip-on  Comfortable day clothes – shorts, skirts or dresses – not trousers  Small packs ready to eat prunes, apricots, figs  Walking sticks (or crutches)  Your information pack and exercise programme © Spire Healthcare

6 How can you prepare?  Optimise your health before your operation  Eat healthily – avoid putting on weight  High fibre and fluids to help prevent constipation  Stop smoking  Regular walks as able  Prepare the home  You will be in hospital for 2-4 nights © Spire Healthcare

7  Arrange for someone to take you home  Arrange for someone to be with you for a few days  Arrange to be off work for 6-12 weeks  Practise your exercises  Practise walking with your sticks  Practise the stairs  Read all the information again before you come in © Spire Healthcare

9 Pre- admission clinic  Usually 3 weeks prior to surgery  Nurse clinic  Physiotherapy assessment © Spire Healthcare

10 Anaesthesia, pain control  Spinal anaesthesia  Regional anaesthetic block  Sedation  General anaesthetic  Pain score  “Regular” medication and “as required medication” © Spire Healthcare

11 Our Patient Journey  Admission time  Fasting times  Before the operation – you will see your consultant, anaesthetist, nurse, physiotherapist and pantry staff  Walk to theatre  In recovery  Back on the ward – attachments !  Drink, eat, move © Spire Healthcare

12 Day 1 - discharge  Daily ward round at 8.30  Regular drug rounds  Nurses will assist with washing/dressing  Physiotherapy morning and afternoon  Walk to bathroom  Sitting out for all meals  X ray  Blood test © Spire Healthcare

13 Day 2  Washing in the bathroom, maybe shower  Physiotherapy – bed and standing exercises, progressing to sticks, stairs  You may be ready to go home later in the afternoon © Spire Healthcare

14 Day 3  You will be helped to shower  Your wound dressing will be changed  Continued physiotherapy  Hopefully home today! © Spire Healthcare

15 When can I go home ?  Good movement in your new joint  Walking well  Safe on stairs  Independent with some supervision with daily needs  Signs of wound healing  Length of stay – 2-4 nights (when clinically ready to go home)  Time of discharge will be confirmed © Spire Healthcare

16 Follow up care  Wound clips are removed at 10-14 days (at Gatwick Park or at your G.P. surgery)  Follow up physiotherapy at 2,4, and 6 weeks  Consultant appointment at 6 weeks (at Gatwick Park or in your local trust hospital)  Hip and knee classes after 6 weeks © Spire Healthcare

17 Practise makes perfect  Please practise with your sticks for at least 5 minutes every day  Please use your sticks for at least 1 full 24 hour period before you come in for your operation  Please practise your exercises daily © Spire Healthcare
