Central Kentucky Partnership in Mathematics and Science (CKPIMS) Central Kentucky Partnership in Mathematics and Science (CKPIMS) Central Kentucky Education Cooperative Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation Kentucky State University University of Kentucky

CKPIMS Project Goals  Improve the overall student performance in mathematics and science in lowest achieving schools in the participating school districts  Close the achievement gap among student subgroups as identified in each school’s Improvement Profile  Develop, implement and evaluate professional development strategies which can be used across participating school districts  Develop, implement, and evaluate a system for monitoring school performance and attainment of improvement goals  Create processes and strategies which will enable school districts and schools to sustain and enlarge upon the impacts of this project

CKPIMS Project Activities Develop an “improvement profile” for each school and overall group of schools using a modified version of the Science/Mathematics Program Improvement Review Conduct a comprehensive review of each districts curriculum to insure alignment with the Kentucky Program of Studies and insure adequate depth of instruction Develop and Implement a training program based on the identified science/mathematics content and pedagogical needs Develop and implement a “peer mentoring program” to support program implementation Develop and implement a leadership training program for school principals and/or lead teachers facilitating high quality mathematics and science instruction Implement a web-based classroom observation system to determine patterns of instruction and track program implementation

Rationale/Assumptions Program Improvement Profile (PIP) Schools cannot develop and/or implement a successful improvement plan without first recognizing and understanding the current level of practice Student achievement will improve as a result of changing both context and practice based on an understanding of the current program A qualified external review team can more readily identify program issues as It is difficult, if not impossible, for teachers and the administration to critically analyze their own existing program Ratings should be based on a rubric which reflects best practice and clearly delineates levels of practice and performance Professional development must be linked to identified program issues and deficiencies to enable both individual and overall program improvement

Program Improvement Profile Procedures  One-Day Site Visit  Observe all teachers teaching mathematics or science  Review school’s program documentation  Interview the principal, teachers, students  Collect teacher perception data  Examine assessment data and student achievement information  Provide school comprehensive report with recommendations

Reporting Program Improvement Profile Findings General meeting of participating school teacher leaders and administrators to: (1) discuss procedures and general findings; (2) discuss strategies for planning and implementing corrective strategies based on Program Improvement Profile Teacher leader/principal team, with support from PIP reviewers, will present findings to school faculty Teacher leaders will provide leadership for development of math/science program improvement plan

Utilizing the Program Improvement Profile: Individual School Level  Review the report with the teaching staff  Prioritize recommendations  Identify major issues from recommendations and develop goals, objectives, strategies for improving student performance  Develop a short-range and long-range plan to meet goals and objectives  Implement the plan including the necessary professional development, contextual changes, curriculum development, etc. as identified in improvement plan  Evaluate activities and progress toward goals on a pre-determined schedule  Adjust plan based on evaluation data and continue implementation

Aggregated PIP Data to Inform the CKPIMS MSP Project  Data from all PIPs will be integrated into a “program-wide profile” to inform the development of coop-wide professional development  Aggregated data will be distributed to participating districts to assist with needs assessment for district-wide professional development  Aggregated data will provide the basis for year 2 activities and development of future regional projects
