9 H2020 Organisation Europe 2020 Priorities
Shared Objectives & Principles International Cooperation European Research Area Simplified Access Coherence with other EU & MS Actions Europe 2020 Priorities Excellence in Science Frontier Research - ERC Future and Emerging Technologies - FET Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Career Development) Research Infrastructures Tackling Societal Challenges Health, demographic change and wellbeing; Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy; Secure, clean and efficient energy; Smart, green and integrated transport; Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials; Inclusive Societies Secure societies Industrial leadership Leadership in Enabling Technologies (ICT, Nanotechnology, Materials,) Access to risk finance Innovation in SMEs Space

10 Tackling Societal Challenges
SC1 Health, demographic change and wellbeing SC2 Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine & maritime research & the bio-economy SC3 Secure, clean and efficient energy SC4 Smart, green and integrated transport SC5 Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials SC6 Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies SC7 Secure societies Holistic, trans-disciplinary approaches to challenges and questions Less prescription, allowing applicants freedom to come up with innovative solutions Strong emphasis on expected impact Projects implemented through consortia-based teams Minimum 3 Member or Associated States Project Duration 3-5 years Workprogramme released every 2 years A key part of Horizon 2020 has been designed to focus on the resolution of particular societal challenges – grand issues – that Europe is facing and will face in 2020. These are the key areas that the European Commission wants researchers to explore over coming years Societal Challenges are: health, demographic change and wellbeing food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy secure, clean and efficient energy smart, green and integrated transport climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials Europe in a changing world – inclusive, innovative and refelctive societies secure societies Here the Commission will fund ‘top-down’ research or applied (i.e. not ‘pure’ research) – addressing specific themes, questions, topics Work Programmes are published to outline Calls that cover individual topics on biannual basis. Each WP - ÷ed into Calls these ÷ed into Topics Funding consortia based project teams (min 3 member states) on different research and innovation actions; innovation actions (where activities and plans will produce products/services that can be brought to the marketplace); and coorindation and support actions (ways of enhancing networks between researchers; communicating research results; developing dissemination practices; supporting dialogue between researchers and policy makers) New and Key to H2020 (compared with FP7) the importance of developing holistic and trans-disciplinary approaches to these challenges and questions. So HSS researchers should consider teaming up with experts and academics from across partner institutions when designing applications across all the areas defined under these societal challenges.
