Should you FLIP? Using the Flipped Classroom to Enhance Learning Should you FLIP? Using the Flipped Classroom to Enhance Learning Dr. Karen Clark, Assistant Professor Science

Objectives Introduce flipped classroom model Discuss flipped pros and cons Share a flipped science lab and students’ perception Discuss current flip project Tools available

What is the Flipped Classroom ? Pedagogical model which combines traditional practices of learning with virtual learning. Value of a flipped class is repurposing the use of time in class (Educause, 2012).

Wait…is this a new concept?

The flipped classroom is NOT Khan Academy Replacing teachers with videos A way to cram more information in Students spending all of their time staring at a computer screen

Pros to Flipped Model Students approach material at their own pace Students are held responsible for their learning Devote classroom time to difficult concepts Active learning, problem based, case study activities Higher Bloom’s Absence, sickness, flat tire, Grandma died… again Review course materials

Cons to Flipped Model TIME required for both instructor & student Culture shift for students Loss of “stage” control No immediate feedback Loss of “personality” Motivation of student Technology issues RISK!!!

Surveying for Student Perception The survey consisted of 10 questions: 4 pertained to student learning 3 pertained to student preparedness 2 pertained to the use of technology 1 pertained to time spent out of class Of the 22 students in the microbiology class, 16 completed the survey.
