 CoML Legacy Programme (Deep-Sea Groups)  To address across-habitat biodiversity and ecosystem function knowledge gaps  Long-term programme: funded by Fondation Total (3 yrs Phase 1 + 3 yrs Phase 2) INDEEP AIMS TO: Develop and synthesise our understanding of deep-sea global biodiversity and functioning Provide a framework to bridge the gap between scientific results and society and to contribute to sustainable management strategies PROJECT INCEPTION AND AIMS

WHO IS INVOLVED? Principal Investigators CoML D-S Group PMs:  Maria Baker (Project Manager), University of Southampton (UK)  Eva Ramirez-Llodra, Norwegian Institute for Water Research (Norway)  Lenaick Menot, Ifremer-Brest (France)  Bhavani Narayanaswamy, Scottish Association for Marine Science (UK)

WHO IS INVOLVED? Oversight Committee:  Paul Tyler (Chair), University of Southampton, (UK)  Craig Smith, University of Hawaii (USA)  Malcolm Clark, National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NZ)  Robert Carney, Louisiana State University (USA)  Myriam Sibuet, Institut Océanographique de Paris (France)

WHO IS INVOLVED? Working Group Leads (INDEEP Phase 2):  WG1: Adrian Glover, Natural History Museum, London (UK) & Tammy Horton, NOC (UK)  WG2: Tim O’Hara, Museum Victoria (Australia) & Derek Tittensor, Dalhousie University (Canada)  WG 3: Anna Metaxas, Dalhousie University (Canada) & Eva Ramirez-Llodra, NIVA (Norway)  WG4: Andrew Thurber, Oregon State University (USA) & Andrew Sweetman, International Research Institute of Stavanger (Norway)

WHO IS INVOLVED?  Over 460 members of INDEEP (via mailing list) from 37 different countries  INDEEP is open to anyone wishing to participate in INDEEP activities at any stage of the programme (dynamic)  No salary money for WG leads or WG participants – for collaborations and end products  Available funds are allocated to specific output products or occasional meeting attendance (supplemented)

RESEARCH THEMES Current INDEEP Working Groups: WG1: Taxonomy & evolution WG2: Global biodiversity & biogeography WG3: Population connectivity WG4: Ecosystem function

WG1: TAXONOMY & EVOLUTION Number of new marine species described annually. Data from WoRMS www.marinespecies.org

WG2: GLOBAL BIOGEOGRAPHY & BIODIVERSITY

WG3: POPULATION CONNECTIVITY To enhance our understanding of the role of the exchange of genes or individuals in maintaining linkages among populations. Key in the design of effective MPAs in the deep sea

WG4: ECOSYSTEM FUNCTION CLIDEEP Meeting, Friday Harbor  Emphasize importance of deep ‐ sea ecosystem function  Update state of knowledge of deep-sea ecosystem function  Evaluating function variability among ocean basins  Identifying how the worth of the deep sea is valued in different countries  Tools for deep-sea management when evaluating the need to manage not only deep-sea resources but also the functions that it provides

To promote interactions between scientists and stakeholders Developed and maintain online database of deep-sea experts for use by all stakeholders to aid advisory role (www.deepseaexperts.org) based on a “Bridging the Gap” questionnaire sent to all INDEEP membersDeveloped and maintain online database of deep-sea experts for use by all stakeholders to aid advisory role (www.deepseaexperts.org) based on a “Bridging the Gap” questionnaire sent to all INDEEP memberswww.deepseaexperts.org Series ofSeries of DIVE-IN briefs addressing deep-sea anthropogenic impacts and management Co-funded Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative Meeting – April 15 th 2013 so disbanded WG5 as DOSI now taking on this functionCo-funded Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative Meeting – April 15 th 2013 so disbanded WG5 as DOSI now taking on this function WG5: ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACT & SOCIAL POLICY (INDEEP Phase 1)

DEEP-OCEAN STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVE INDEEP played central role in the creation of DOSI and is currently funding some important activities. The mission of DOSI is to integrate science, technology, policy, law, economics and industry to advise on ecosystem-based management of resource use in the deep ocean and strategies to maintain the integrity of deep-ocean ecosystems within and beyond national jurisdiction.

 General Administration of project  Support WG leads  Involved in some specific WG activities  Facilitate regular information exchange in ever-growing community (e.g. website, Twitter, newsletters to update on INDEEP progress, Deep-Sea Life, deepseaexperts.org)  Raise the profile of and support the deep-sea biology community (e.g. promotion of outputs at a variety of meetings, workshops and other fora such as INDEEP special sessions, letters of support, funding activities etc.)  Identify potential funding sources for INDEEP INDEEP OFFICE ACTIVITIES

 Public outreach (MOOC, free online deep-sea ecology and deep-ocean stewardship course, open days, kids book)  Produced listing of over 270 online videos relating to deep-sea (INDEEP website)  Facilitated community input to key global initiatives (e.g. WOA, GOC – high-seas policy papers, VentBase, ICES WGDE, ISA guidelines etc.) INDEEP OFFICE ACTIVITIES
