The third captivity of this sacrament is that most wicked abuse of all, in consequence of which there is today no more generally accepted and firmly believed opinion in the Church than this — that the mass is a good work and a sacrifice.

From this you will see that nothing else is needed to have a worthy mass than a faith that confidently relies on this promise, believes these words of Christ are true, and does not doubt that these infinite blessings have been bestowed upon it

I do not say this because I condemn the seven sacraments, but because I deny that they can be proved from the Scriptures.

The sacrament of penance, which I added to these two, lacks the divinely instituted visible sign, and is, as I have said, nothing but a return to baptism.

Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, when He said Poenitentiam agite [“Repent!”], willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance.

Therefore those preachers of indulgences are in error, who say that by the pope's indulgences a man is freed from every penalty, and saved.

Christians are to be taught that he who gives to the poor or lends to the needy does a better work than buying indulgences.

Why does not the pope, whose wealth is to- day greater than the riches of the richest, build just this one church of St. Peter with his own money, rather than with the money of poor believers?

All Christians are truly of the "spiritual estate," and there is among them no difference at all but that of office.

For when the pope acts contrary to the Scriptures, it is our duty to stand by the Scriptures, to reprove him, and to constrain him.

Now God help us, and give us one of the trumpets with which the walls of Jericho were overthrown, that we may blow down these walls of straw and paper.

We are all alike Christians, and have baptism, faith, Spirit and all things alike.

Faith alone without works justifies, sets free, and saves, as I shall show more clearly below.

This is that Christian liberty, our faith, the effect of which is, not that we should be careless or lead a bad life, but that no one should need the law or works for justification and salvation.

For in that part in which he [a Christian] is free he does no works, but in that in which he is a servant he does all works.

All our works should be directed to the advantage of others, since every Christian has such abundance through his faith.
