Chromosome 10 Researched by: Ashley Thorne 136M base pairs 1305 total genes on chromosome AND…the entire chromosome has been sequenced since 2004!!

Genes Growth Development Factor 2 (GDF2)- This gene is responsible for cytokine activity, growth factor activity and protein binding. (10q11.22) 5- hydroxytryptamin e (serotonin) receptor 7 (adenylate cyclase- coupled) (HTR7 )- This gene is responsible for blood circulation, synaptic transmission, G- Protein coupler activity, circadian rhythm, neurotransmitter receptor activity, and signal transduction. (10q21-q24 ) Clarin 3 (CLRN3)- integral to membrane and membrane (10q26.2)

Mutations At 10q21.- Variations in this particular region of chromosome 10 have been associated with the risk of developing Crohn disease (disorder that causes an inflammation of the digestive tract (most commonly affect the lower part of the small intestines) A loss of all or part of chromosome 10 is often found in brain tumors called gliomas, particularly in aggressive, fast-growing gliomas. The association of cancerous tumors with a loss of chromosome 10 shows that some genes on this chromosome play critical roles in controlling the growth and division of cells. Without these genes, cells would grow and divide too quickly, resulting in cancer.

Linked Genes ALDH18A1 and COL17A1 are found one right after the other at 10q23.3

Interesting Chromosome 10 carries genes linked to cancer and epilepsy, as well as genes associated with susceptibility to diseases like diabetes, schizophrenia, obesity, and Alzheimer’s.

These conditions linked to genes on chromosome 10: (don’t know the exact gene location) Apert syndrome Autosomal dominant partial epilepsy with auditory features Beare-Stevenson cutis gyrata syndrome breast cancer Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease cholesteryl ester storage disease Cockayne syndrome Cornelia de Lange syndrome Cowden syndrome Crouzon syndrome Dubin-Johnson syndrome hypermethioninemia Jackson-Weiss syndrome juvenile polyposis syndrome metachromatic leukodystrophy 2-methylbutyryl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency multiple endocrine neoplasia nonsyndromic deafness Pfeiffer syndrome porphyria renal coloboma syndrome tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency Usher syndrome Wolman disease These are just SOME of the MANY associated with chromosome 10

Size in comparison to the other chromosomes obviously the tenth biggest out of all, but it is smaller than the X chromosome. Interesting: contains 4-4.5 percent of the total DNA in our cells.
