X 1. Clear the Roamers ‘Go’ Memory To clear the Roamer's memory press CM CM. The first time CM is pressed a warning is sounded. If it has been pressed by mistake, press another key or wait 10 seconds and the first press will be ignored. CM

X 2. Change Step Size Roamer’s standard step size is the length of its own body i.e. 30cm. To change the steps that the roamer takes press This will change each step to 15cm. Change the yellow numbers to change the step sizes. 1 1 5 5 [ ] GO

X 3. Forwards The roamer moves forwards in roamer sized steps of 30cm. To move forwards 30cm press To move forwards 60cm, 90cm etc. Change the to, etc. 1 1 GO 1 1 2 2 3 3

X 4. Backwards The roamer moves backwards in roamer sized steps of 30cm. To move backwards 30cm press To move backwards 60cm, 90cm etc. Change the to, etc. 1 1 GO 1 1 2 2 3 3

X 5. Turning Right To tell roamer to turn, he needs to know the number of degrees. Roamer will need a set of instructions like this: The 9 and 0 stand for 90 o and should be changed to fit the turn you want. 9 9 GO 0 0

X 6. Turning Left To tell roamer to turn, he needs to know the number of degrees. Roamer will need a set of instructions like this: The 9 and 0 stand for 90 o and should be changed to fit the turn you want. 9 9 GO 0 0

X 7. Putting It All Together The instructions you have learnt so far can be added together into a sequence. Press at the end. Remember to clear the memory before you start. is the same as saying go forward 10 spaces. Roamer will move forward 6 spaces and then move forward again 4 spaces. 6 + 4 = 10 CM 6 6 4 4 GO

X Putting It All Together CM 5 5 9 9 0 0 1 1 GO Roamer will move forward 5 spaces then right turn 90 o and then move forward 1 space

X 8. Clearing The Last Entry If you make a mistake, then cancels the last entry CE

X 9. Explaining Repeat When you know how to write a sequence of instructions the next stage is getting some instructions to repeat. Repeat means to do the same thing again a set number of times. Look at the example on the next slide.next slide

X Repeat To make this pattern, roamer needs to go - forward 1 space turn 90 o to the left forward 1 space turn 90 o to the right forward 1 space turn 90 o to the left forward 1 space turn 90 o to the right The instructions are repeated 2 times. If the pattern continued then you can see it would repeat the same instructions again and again.

X 10. Repeating Instructions CM 2 2 R R [] 1 1 9 9 0 0 1 1 9 9 0 0 GO Clear Go Memory RepeatNo. Of Repeats Open Brackets Instructions Close Brackets Go

X 11. Shapes Use the repeat command to make shapes Click on the shape to find out more

Back to ‘Shapes’ X How many times are the instructions repeated? Try making a square using the button. If you get stuck click on the square for help. Can you make squares of different sizes? What do you need to change? Square Forward 2 Right Turn 90 o Forward 2 Right Turn 90 o Forward 2 Right Turn 90 o Forward 2 Right Turn 90 o R

X CM R 4 [ FORWARD 2 RIGHT TURN 90 O ] GO 90 o

Back to ‘Shapes’ X Pentagon How many times will the instructions repeat? Have a look at the instructions for a square and triangle and see if you can see a pattern. R Try making a pentagon using the button. If you get stuck click on the pentagon for help. Can you make pentagons of different sizes? Can you make irregular pentagons? The internal angles add up to 540 o Have a go! Clue: Each angle of turn for Roamer is 72 o

X CM R 5 [ FORWARD 2 RIGHT TURN 72 O ] GO The internal angles are each 108 o for a regular pentagon. (Think of Roamer continuing in a straight line and turning from that line. Remember angles on a straight line add up to 180 o and 180-108= 72) 108 o 72 o

Back to ‘Shapes’ X Triangle Forward 2 Right turn 120 Forward 2 Right turn 120 Forward 2 Right turn 120 How many times are the instructions repeated? R Try making a triangle using the button. If you get stuck click on the triangle for help. Can you make triangles of different sizes? Can you make different shaped triangles? What do you need to change?

X Try CM R 3 [ FORWARD 2 RIGHT TURN 120 O ] GO Look at the angles of the triangle. Are they right angles? The internal angles of a triangle add up to 180 o For this triangle, each internal angle is 60 o Roamer needs to turn 120 o as angles on a straight line add up to 180 o 60 o 120 o 60 o

Back to ‘Shapes’ X Rectangle Where do the instructions repeat? How many times? Why are the instructions a bit more complicated? R Try making a rectangle using the button. If you get stuck click on the rectangle for help. Forward 4 Right turn 90 o Forward 2 Right turn 90 o Forward 4 Right turn 90 o Forward 2 Right turn 90 o

X CM R 2 [ FORWARD 4 RIGHT TURN 90 O FORWARD 2 RIGHT TURN 90 O ] GO 90 o

Back to ‘Shapes’ X Try making a uniform cross using the button. If you get stuck click on the cross for help. Can you make crosses of different sizes and widths? Cross Take care with the left and right turns with this shape. Have a look at the repeat pattern carefully. R

X CM R 4 [ FORWARD 1 RIGHT TURN 90 O FORWARD 1 RIGHT TURN 90 O FORWARD 1 LEFT TURN 90 O ] GO Or try: CM R 4 [ R2 [ FORWARD 1 RIGHT TURN 90 O ] FORWARD 1 LEFT TURN 90 O ] GO

X Making Music Look for button with the musical note. press two numbers - The first number tells Roamer the length of the note – 1 makes the shortest note, 8 makes the longest note. The second number tells Roamer how high or low the note is – 1 makes the lowest note, 13 makes the highest note. 14 makes a rest (a silent note). Carry on pressing different sets of 2 numbers to make a range of notes. Then press Try it! CM GO
