PERIODIC TABLE NOTES

 An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom. All of the matter in the universe is made up of different combinations of these elements.  The Periodic Table is a system of organizing all of the known elements. ELEMENTS AND THE PERIODIC TABLE

 Elements on the Periodic Table are organized in vertical groups. These groups are based on the characteristics of the elements.  The most reactive elements are on the far left. These are the Alkali Metals (shown here in light blue).  The least reactive elements are the gases that appear on the far right side of the table. These are the Noble Gases. They do not react to form many compounds (shown here in orange).  Other properties, such as melting and boiling points, are also used to arrange the elements on the Periodic Table.  Our “Mystery Metal Meltdown” lab showed us that different metals can have different melting points. STRUCTURE OF THE PERIODIC TABLE

 There are several general classes of elements that appear on the periodic table: Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids.  Metals are on the left of the zig-zag line. Nonmetals are to the right of the zig-zag line.  Metalloids have properties of both metals and nonmetals. They occur along the zig-zag line in the Periodic Table (shown here in green). TYPES OF ELEMENTS ON THE PERIODIC TABLE

 Sort the Properties of metals and nonmetals on the Airliner T-Chart! METALS, NONMETALS, AND METALLOIDS
