3. 3 The Role of the Teaching Assistant providing support to children with mathematics, reading and writing on an individual, class or small group basis giving extra help to children from ethnic minorities or those with special needs helping develop programmes of learning activities and to adapt appropriate materials motivating and encouraging pupils assisting with marking and correcting work attending meetings and reviews helping with school events, trips and activities.

8. Activity 2: Challenging Expectations ‘x’ is a child who has cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs. She has little voluntary movement and cannot speak. She is incontinent. She has been assessed in the past as having a development delay of over 6 years. She also has diabetes. How do you imagine her life when she is 25? 8

10. 2007 “The person described in this case history is now 20, studying English at University with a package of support which is paid for and managed by her mother under the Direct payments scheme. Some of the assistants have learned to facilitate her speech and written work using Facilitated Communication. She is also part of a group of young people who offer training to mainstream schools and colleges on inclusion, for which she gets paid. Her assistants are trained by her mother to manage her diabetes” 10

11. 2014 Finished Uni 2010 with great a well deserved English Degree. Continues to deliver training, has set up a group for people without voices. Is a member of the local poetry group and has published her own book of essays and poetry. Is a present moving house in preparation for independent living. 11

What makes the difference between A and B This is your “Normal” life Circle. “C” is very important this is where we build new life circles from form relationships have a ‘Voice’ in the world. If you have a disability especially from childhood the view is different. 14
