2 H ITLER ’ S R ISE TO P OWER Massive Depression in Germany during the 20’s and 30’s Hitler is arrested for speaking out against government in 1920s. Writes a book called Mein Kampf (My Struggle) Outlines his entire plan to create a “perfect race”

3 H ITLER ’ S R ISE TO P OWER Nazi Party gains support as Hitler emerges as leader Appointed to Chancellor in 1933 Promised Germany would become a power again! Begins to get rid of anyone who opposes his ideas Concentration camps are set up for Jews

8 M UNICH C ONFERENCE Britain, France, Italy, and Germany all met in Munich, Germany. Hitler promised Britain and France that Germany would not take over any more territory…he lies Appeasement- the practice of giving into aggression to avoid war. Britain and France

11 T HE I NVASION OF P OLANDP OLAND August of 1939 Hitler signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact with Stalin. Both agreed not attack one another. Blitzkrieg- Lightning war Using quick strikes with planes, tanks, and infantry to catch the enemy off-guard

17 W HO ’ S SIDE ARE THEY ON ? Great Britain France Soviet Union The United States (when they got involved) Germany Italy Japan All told, there were well over 70 countries involved in the conflict

18 A TTACK ON F RANCE In Spring of 1940, Hitler along with Italy, attacked France. Britain sent troops in support. They were quickly overpowered by Germany and Italy. In 6 weeks, the Axis powers had taken control of France

19 T HE B ATTLE OF B RITAIN Germany next eyed Great Britain. Germany attacked London and other British cities. Britain gunned down over 2,000 planes. After months of bombing, Hitler gave up his attempt to take Britain, they had held him off.

20 S TOP AND T HINK Who made up the Axis Powers? Who made up the Allied Powers? What significance did the take-over of France have on Europe? List all 5 territories that Hitler took over after promising Britain he would not.

21 T HE U.S. M OVES T OWARD W AR FDR fought to end the Neutrality Act. Banned the sale of arms to warring nations. Cash-and-Carry Plan- U.S. could sell arms to the Allies, as long as they paid in cash and picked them up on their own ships. U.S. reinstated military draft in preparation for war. Many people felt we had no choice, but to join the fight.

22 FDR RUNS FOR A THIRD TERM ! This broke the precedent that was set by George Washington. The Lend-Lease Act- allowed the sale or loan of war materials to any country who could help defend the U.S. The U.S. sent airplanes, tanks, guns, ammo, etc. to Britain for aid.

23 T HE U.S. AND J APAN U.S. feared Japanese advancement as they continued to take over China. U.S. issued embargo on Japan. Refused to sell them oil and scrap metal until they removed troops from China. This angered Japan, and they began to make plans for a secret attack on the U.S.
