Future of MDR - ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries (MDR) Larry Fitzwater, SC 32 WG 2 Convener Computer Scientist U.S. Environmental Protection Agency May 17, 2004 Presentasjon hentet fra leder av arbeidsgruppe 2 i ISO JTC1 SC32 som utvikler standarden

2 MDR Family of Standards  ISO/IEC 11179  ISO/IEC 20943  ISO/IEC 20944 Designated by ISO as freely available without cost.

3 ISO/IEC 11179, Parts 1 - 6 Part 1: Framework Part 2: Classification for Administered Items Part 3: Registry Metamodel and Basic Attributes Part 4: Formulation of Data Definitions Part 5: Naming and Identification Principles Part 6: Registration

4 Part 1: Framework  Facilitates acquisition and registration of data  Expedites access to and use of data  Simplifies data manipulation based on characteristics described by metadata  Enables development of a data representation metamodel for CASE tools and repositories  Facilitates electronic data interchange and data sharing  Includes definition of terms

5 Part 2: Classification for Administered Items  Deriving and formulating abstract and application administered items  Ensuring appropriate attribute and attribute-value inheritance  Reducing ambiguous information  Recognizing relationships among data element concepts, data elements and other administered items

6 Part 3: Registry Metamodel and Basic Attributes  Specifies a metamodel and attributes to describe data items (e.g., name, definition, permissible values, size, representation, datatype)  Outlines other attributes that will provide information for data management  Provides for consistency in recording metadata information  Encourages comparison of data across systems  Facilitates information exchange

7 Part 4: Formulation of Data Definitions  Define the meaning of data items  Ensure consistency and quality  Facilitate data shareability  Contains both rules and guidelines

8 Part 5: Naming and Identification Principles  Defines the identifying attributes  Describes the relationship of the attributes to each other  Includes principles by which naming conventions can be developed and documented  Describes an example naming convention

9 Part 6: Registration  Describes the procedure by which data items are registered and assigned an internationally unique identifier  Outlines steps in the assignment of Registration Statuses  Reviews the role of a Registration Authority

10 Related Standards Efforts  ISO/IEC 20943 - Information Technology – Achieving Metadata Registry Content Consistency Part 1: Data Elements, guidance and recommendations on the registration of data elements within a metadata registry. Part 2: XML Structured Data, guidance and recommendations on the registration of XML features within a metadata registry. Part 3: Value Domains, guidance and recommendations on the registration of value domains within a metadata registry. Part 4: Overview
