1 Redundancy DHCP and Domain Controller Dr. John P. Abraham Professor UTPA

2 DHCP Redundancy Divide usable IP addresses into Static and Dynamic. dynamically assigned IP addresses are divided among multiple DHCP servers Each DHCP gets a scope (range of IP addresses)

3 Multiple domain controllers Reasons: – Redundancy – Clustering – can’t cluster unless you have more than one domain controller – Presence of more than one geographical location You can make remote sites read only Read only receives updates from the primary domain controller. Two way updates on WAN might slow it down.

4 Domain controller setup As directed to you in assignments, you must have static IP on servers with domain controller. Add the Active Directory Role from the Server Manager – If this is the first domain controller, choose create new domain in new forest – If this is a backup dc, choose Add domain controller in existing forest. Give the existing domain name. When finished, you have to do a dcpromo from the console prompt. – This is where you choose read only, if that’s what you want to do. Usually it is not read only.
