2 Warm - Up Write the verbal phrase as an algebraic expression or equation. Solve if applicable. Seven squared increased by a number. The difference of four times a number and seven is nine. Twenty-five is the quotient of a number and 3.5.

3 Example 5a Word Problems
Joan bought a soft drink for four dollars and nine candy bars. She spent a total of forty-nine dollars. How much did each candy bar cost?

4 Example 5b Word Problems
Oceanside Bike Rental Shop charges an 18- dollar fixed fee plus 7 dollars an hour for renting a bike. Jason paid 74 dollars to rent a bike. How many hours did he pay to have the bike checked out ?

5 Exit Slip 2π‘₯+6=12 8π‘₯βˆ’2 π‘₯+7 =16 π‘₯ 3 =8 Tom had 131 dollars to spend on 6 books. After buying them, he had 17 dollars left. How much did each book cost? Tom bought seven new baseball trading cards to add to his collection. The next day his dog ate half of his collection. There are now only 28 cards left. How many cards did Tom start with?

6 Consecutive Number Problems
If the numbers are consecutive, use: 1st number = π‘₯ 2nd number = π‘₯ + 1 3rd number = π‘₯ + 2 etc.

7 Consecutive Number Problems
If the numbers are consecutive ODD/EVEN, use: 1st number = x 2nd number = x + 2 3rd number = x + 4 etc.

8 Example 1 The sum of 3 consecutive even numbers add up to Find the three numbers. 1st= 332 2nd= 334 3rd= 336

9 Example 2 The sum of 4 consecutive numbers add up to Find the four numbers. 1st= 1201 2nd= 1202 3rd= 1203 4th= 1204

10 Example 3 You and 3 friends divide the proceeds of a garage sale equally. The garage sale earned $412. How much money did each of you receive? $103 each

11 Example 4 A rectangle is 5 yards longer than it is wide. Its perimeter is 98. Find the length and width. 27 by 22

12 Example 5 Mary’s four test scores were 89, 78, 86, and 90. What does she need to score on her fifth test to average an 85? 82
