1 Perimeter and Area Equations

2 Perimeter When you think of perimeter think of walking the fence around the perimeter of a yard. You walk the length of each side and add the lengths up to get the total distance walked.

3 Perimeter A triangle has 3 sides to add up.
A rectangle has 4 sides to add up. A Trapezoid also has 4 sides to add up.

4 Perimeter Triangle: Rectangle: Trapezoid: Perimeter = Perimeter =
Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 Rectangle: Perimeter = Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 + Side 4 Trapezoid: Perimeter = Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 + Side 4

5 Area Area is the surface that is surrounded by a shape. Examples:
The grass inside of a fenced-in area. The rug on the floor of a room. The turf covering a football field.

6 Area Area of a Triangle: Area of a Rectangle:
base * height divided by two or A = (b*h)/2 Area of a Rectangle: Area = base * height or A = (b*h) Area = length * width or A = (l*w)

7 Practice a = 5, b = 4, c = 3 and h = 2 What is the perimeter of the triangle? P = P = 12 What is the area of the triangle? A = (4)(2)/(2) A = 4

8 Practice l = 5, w = 4 What is the perimeter of the rectangle?
Perimeter = l + l + w + w or P = 2l + 2w P = 2(5) + 2(4) P = P = 18 What is the area of the triangle? Area = l*w A = (5)(2) A = 10
