GPK-1 FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the second oldest and the second largest faculty in the university established in 1871 There are 10 departments and about 140 racademic staff in the faculty History Banki / turbine Karman / vortices Jendrashik / diesel engine, gas turbine Gabor / holography (Nobel prize) Heller / dry cooling towers Tobias / machine tool design … The dean of the faculty – Prof. Gábor Stépán member of the HAS

GPK-2 Research story

GPK-3 The answer

GPK-4 The recommendation

GPK-5 Turbine blade polishing – force control NEI Parsons Newcastle (UK) (Prof L Maunder)  Siemens  Budapest

GPK-6 When you renew the design of the car or its parts You may choose –Department of Machine and Industrial Product Design (aesthetic design of the carbody or design of machine element, analysis of efficiency of driving system, tribological investigation) –Department of Fluid Mechanics (analysis of air resistance of car, improvement of catalic converter and exhaust gas recirculation system using computational fluid dynamics simulation

GPK-7 When you improve the engine and circulation system You may choose –Department of Energy Engineering (Understand combustion and emission, investigation of fuel properties and alternative fuels, engine tests …) –Department of Hydrodynamics Systems (aeroacoustical investigations)

GPK-8 When you are interested in new materials or new technologies You may choose –Department of Material Science and Engineering (investigation and improvement of metallic materials, development of forming and welding technologies …) –Department of Polymer Engineering (trial of carbon fibers and polymer based materials …) –Department of Manufacturing Science and Engineering (development of manufacturing, automation of assembly lines, optimizing large scale production systems …)

GPK-9 When you extend the intelligence and sensing ability of cars You may choose –Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Information Engineering (development and analysis sensors, mechatronics devices, additional intelligence for more comfortable driving …) –Department of Applied Mechanics (investigation of tyre dynamics, thermal and thermo-mechanical stress, fracture meghanical experiments in composite materials…)

GPK-10 Projects Competence in: 1. Modeling of the non-linear, time- and temperature-dependent material behavior of rubber and rubber-like materials 2. Characterization of the asphalt’s surface topography (Power Spectral Analysis, surface roughness measurements, etc.) 3. Contact modeling of rubber/ rough counterpart sliding pairs CONTACT MECHANICS, RUBBER FRICTION (SLIDING AND ROLLING), FE MODELLING 4. FE modeling of hysteresis induced rolling and sliding resistance 5. FE modeling of hysteresis induced and friction related heat generation (thermo-mechanical coupled analysis) EU FP6 research project „ Knowledge-based Radical Innovation Surfacing for Tribology and Advanced Lubrication ” (EU Project Reference NMP3-CT-2005-515837, www.kristal-project.org)www.kristal-project.org

GPK-11 Projects Tyre dynamics - „Memory effect” of tire Investigation of shimmy phenomenon with the a special time delayed tire model. Results of the theoretical calculations, (predicted stability boundary and quasi-periodic vibrations) are validated by experiments.

GPK-12 Projects Large-scale horizontal wind tunnel for vehicle aerodynamics investigations Wind tunnel experiment CFD analysis

GPK-13 Projects Upper Limb Physiotherapy Exercises for Patients Suffering from Spastic Hemiparesis (REHAROB - EC IST 1999-13109 project)

GPK-14 Projects Neuro-Rehabilitation The ALLADIN project focuses on the development of a user- friendly natural language based decision support software for neuro-rehabilitation, in particular in stroke. ALLADIN, if implemented provides an adequate and fast solution for a client centred practice, for discharge planning and for utilization of rehabilitation resources. This fulfils the social and political expectation of a substantial but honest cost cutting by measuring therapeutic efficiency in terms of mean quality-adjusted duration.

GPK-15 Projects Risk Management The RESCUER project focuses on both : (a) the development of an intelligent mechatronic Emergency Risk Management tool and (b) on the associated Information and Communication Technology.  To improve risk management by using new mechatronic & intelligent methods for bomb disposal and rescue operations & IT techniques for the management of rescue missions.  To apply and combine advanced and intelligent sensing techniques for the detection of explosives, chemical, biological and radioactive materials, and human bodies. ..

GPK-16 Projects ACROBOTER

GPK-17 Projects Hybrid method for aeroacoustic simulations Edge Tone: plane free jet – wedge interaction periodic vortex shedding dipole sound source model for outside rear-view mirrors or woodwind instruments Cavity Tone: flow over a cavity unstable shear layer interaction with the downstream edge complex sound source e.g. flow over gaps on body of a car or sunroof windo

GPK-18 Contacts Additional and more detailed information can be gained from the slides of the departments or searching the homepage of the faculty: http://portal.bme.hu/langs/en/GPK.aspx You can contact directly the departments or the Vice Dean of the international and scientific affairs, Dr. Tibor Szalay: szalay@manuf.bme.hu Other contact of the faculty Mail:Műegyetem rkp. 3, Budapest H-1111, HUNGARY, EU Postal address: P.O.Box 91, Budapest, H-1521, HUNGARY, EU
