2. This session will explain the key concepts of functional skills English, Maths and IT, and offer guidance on how to embed them into your teaching. We will examine ways of helping your learners to develop English, maths and ICT skills outside the setting in which they are learning. 2

Punctuate a simple sentence with capital letter and full stop. Write personal details on a form. Write a sentence using linking words e.g. as, and, but. Use capital letters, full stops and question marks correctly. Use the sounds of letters to break down and read words. Get the gist of a short piece of writing. Spell correctly a wider range of common words. Write in complete sentences. Write legibly. Use a dictionary. Ensure sentences make sense and words in correct order. Plan and draft a piece of writing e.g. letter to friend, note to school, informal letter. Use paragraphs. Use a range of reference material. Spell correctly. Read and understand a variety of written material. Plan and draft writing using appropriate grammar and punctuation e.g. formal letter. Be able to read and understand a wide range of materials e.g. H&S manual, poetry, novels, plays such as Shakespeare, and all types of literature. Punctuate correctly e.g. commas, apostrophes, inverted commas. Use a variety of writing styles e.g. letter of complaint, assignment, poetry, deliver.
