5 Health Effects of Cigarettes Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body; causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general. Cigarette smoking has many adverse reproductive and early childhood effects, including:  increased risk for infertility  preterm delivery  stillbirth  low birth weight  Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Research indicates evidence of negative effects of nicotine on fetal brain and nervous system development.

6 Health Effects of Secondhand Smoke Secondhand smoke exposure causes disease and premature death in children and adults who do not smoke. There is no risk-free level of exposure. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk for: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) acute respiratory infections ear problems more severe asthma Smoking by parents causes respiratory symptoms and slows lung growth in their children.

7 What New Mothers Say: “I would have appreciated more help to stop smoking during my pregnancy. I don’t think doctors emphasize that enough.” “I think doctors should advise patients to quit more aggressively.” - Personal Comments from the NC Prams Survey, No. 153, May 2007
