3 Patient preparation 1.Post a Teaching Clinic plaque from RPAP/University in the waiting room 2.Have a notice about learners in each exam room 3.Introduce the idea to new patients “I hope you will be comfortable when we have medical students working with our team.” 4.Learner’s photo / name on office door helps incorporate her into your clinical team

4 Staff preparation Let them know when learner is arriving Explain role of medical student or resident Emphasize learner will be part of the clinic team Discuss how they will inform patients Patient booking Work from own list or from preceptor’s? Need to change preceptor appointment schedule?

5 Your colleagues Let them know when learner is arriving Explain level of learner Different expectations for clinical clerk vs second-year family medicine resident Allocate teaching responsibilities Remember to cover vacation time /days off Discuss financial issues How to distribute stipend How to bill with students/residents Student may slow you down
