Unit 30 – task 1 Danny ball

Formats BMP- Bitmap image file is a raster graphics image file which is used to store the bitmap files, such as a graphic adapter on companies e.g. Microsoft it is capable of storing 2d images of a certain width, height and resolution. PNG- Portable network graphics is a raster graphics format which supports lossless data compression, it supports palette-based images, greyscale images and full colour non palette based images. Was designed to transfer images via the internet, not for quality prints. GIF- Graphics interchange format supports the image size, up to 8 bits per pixels. GIF images are compressed using the (LZW) lossless data compression to reduce the file size without losing the visual quality. JPEG- Joint photographic expert group is most commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photos, the compression can be adjusted depending on the size and image quality. Lossy compression is the most commonly used to compress multimedia data. (Audio, video and still images) Sources: Wikipedia 9/9/13

Converting files Converting files is the conversion of computer data from one format to another. The need for converting files is that some web pages need a specific type of file, eg jpeg to work, some images work better like jpeg doesn’t have a white background while png does or some other types of images take up less room so more space is saved if there is a limit to the amount they can use. The conversion will make sure that the file is the right size, resolution and that it can be copied or saved. Sources: Wikipedia 9/9/13

Graphic cards A graphic card is a piece of software within the computer that is responsible for rendering the image on the screen/monitor. There are many different types of graphic cards for many different monitors and the differences are that you can get them to the best resolution that the computer screen can show and support. A graphics card must work hard to ensure that it does the right thing, to render images to the screen and make sure that they are up to the best resolution that they can be. Unlike text files, graphics images are much larger files which are full of data and must be processed by the graphics card. Sources: wisegeek 11/9/13

Graphic tablets A graphics tablet is a piece of hardware which is an input device within the computer which allows you to draw images free hand on the screen, like you are drawing on paper with a pencil. They may also be used to take peoples signatures and can also capture pictures that stuck down, this is called digitalising. The actual graphic card is a tablet which allows you use a stylus as a replacement for a mouse if you want to, and makes it a lot easier to draw pictures on paint, paintshop pro and photoshop. 6 Digital cameras A digital camera is a camera where you can take digital pictures and video within a little piece of technology, these videos and videos can be downloaded to the computer via a USB. You can get a digital camera as a single piece or on a PDA or mobile phone. These cameras are now very clear and have high resolutions and megapixels in the whole image. The camera itself can now make sure that the right amount of light is going into the lens and automatically adapts top the correct brightness, all because of the progression in technology. There are many different settings and functions that you can do on a digital camera e.g. see the picture as soon as it is take, choose to delete it, crop, stitch and also edit the brightness, effect etc. Sources: wikipedia 11/9/13

Printers A printer is a device that is either wired or wireless and linked directly to the computer, it allows you to print whatever you want onto any size paper. You can print it in either colour or black and white, images are clear if the image is high pixels, also some printers will have a high dots per inch. You can print words in any font as they know all the different types of font. On a lot of the more modern printers you can now scan as well, and it will just print what it has scanned. 8 Monitors A monitor is the visual screen of the computer, where you can look at it all on, the display screen is typically a thin film transistor liquid crystal display. (LCD) the main use of LCD screens as a computer monitor in laptops is because of the lower power consumption, lighter weight, and smaller size. They are used for a lot in recent years, now you can write, watch TV, films, look on the internet, chat to people, anything now. They are now one of the most Sources: Wikipedia 12/9/13

CD-ROM CD-ROM is a pre-pressed disk which contains data, there main priority is to transfer data from one place to another. CD-ROM's have many different uses, they are used to distribute computer software such as dvd’s, music and video games. CD-ROM’s also have different capacity sizes, it depends on how much you are wanting to put on it, and what its for. Some will just hold MB (megabytes) and some GB (gigabytes). You can also get blank CD’s that you can put your own content on, pictures, videos, music etc. Sources: Wikipedia 30/9/13

HDD A HDD drive is a hard drive disk which is a storage device, it can also receive data from other places. It is the mechanism that control the positioning, reading and the writing of the hard disk drive which furnishes the largest amount of data storage of the PC. This can have big amounts of memory as the computer will hold basically all of the data that is on there. Sources: Wikipedia 30/9/13

Memory SD cards A memory SD card is a little device that holds a big chunk of memory, something that you can store some data on, for example, pictures, videos etc. they can be used within in technology such as cameras, digital camcorders, mobile phones and laptops, so that more can be held on the camera, and more can be taken. 12 Vector graphic software Vector imaging is one of the main and biggest graphic software in the world, vector graphics use lines, points and shapes to display, all to do with mathematical equations. Some vector editors are Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw and Microsoft office Visio. All of these use vector graphics to design or create their programmes.

Bitmap software Most of the images that you can see on your screen are composed of bitmaps, these are millions of dots which create the picture. The most common filetypes include BMP, JPEG, GIF and TIFF’s. if you zoom in on an image and it goes blurry, this is because there is not enough dots for it to cope over a certain size to be clear. Using vector will allow you to zoom in and for it to stay clear. Sources: Iwebtool 2/10/13

Photo manipulation software Photo manipulation is also known as ‘photoshopping’ since Photoshop has been introduced. It is the application which gives you the chance to edit any picture you’d like to. They are edited using a range of different editing techniques to change the whole idea of the image, by using analog or digital means. People do this to make the image perfect, say if it is a persons face, they get rid of blemishes, spots and even moles to make the face look clear.
