Objective 1 Square binomials. Slide 4.6-3

Square binomials. Square of a Binomial The square of a binomial is a trinomial consisting of For x and y, the following are true. Notice that in the square of a sum, all of the terms are positive. In the square of a difference, the middle term is negative. A common error when squaring a binomial is to forget the middle term of the product. In general, Slide 4.6-4

Solution: Find (x + 4) 2. Slide 4.6-5 Squaring a Binomial CLASSROOM EXAMPLE 1

Solution: Square each binomial and simplify. Slide 4.6-6 Squaring Binomials CLASSROOM EXAMPLE 2

Objective 2 Find the product of the sum and difference of two terms. Slide 4.6-7

Find the product of the sum and difference of two terms. In binomial products of the form (x + y)(x − y), one binomial is the sum of two terms and the other is the difference of the same two terms. Consider (x + 2)(x − 2). Product of the Sum and Difference of Two Terms Slide 4.6-8

Find the product. Solution: Slide 4.6-9 Finding the Product of the Sum and Difference of Two Terms CLASSROOM EXAMPLE 3

Find each product. Solution: Slide 4.6-10 Finding the Product of the Sum and Difference of Two Terms CLASSROOM EXAMPLE 4

Objective 3 Find greater powers of binomials. Slide 4.6-11

Solution: Find each product. Slide 4.6-12 Finding Greater Powers of Binomials CLASSROOM EXAMPLE 5
