1 Module 2 Lesson 7 Objective: Develop estimation strategies by reasoning about the weight in kilograms of a series of familiar objects to establish mental benchmark measures.

2 Application Problem Justin puts a 1-kilogram bag of flour on one side of a pan balance. How many 100-gram bags of flour does he need to put on the other pan to balance the scale?

3 Represent the Problem 100g 1 kg 1000 g

4 Solution 100g X 10 = 1000 g Justin has to put 10 bags of flour on the other pan to balance the scale.

5 Objects that Weigh About 1 Kg
Problem Set Lesson 7 Objects that Weigh About 1 Kg Actual Weight A dictionary 1,240 g A pineapple 1,000 g A globe 1,180 g

6 Objects that Weigh about 100 grams
Actual Weight An apple 90 g A Calculator 80 g A Notebook 120 g

7 Objects that Weigh About 10 grams
Actual Weight A Blue Pattern Block 7 g A dry erase marker 9 g A bracelet 8 g

8 Helpful Hints Look closely at the scale and count the tick marks in between the whole numbers. This will help you decide what the tick marks mean when estimating or determining the weight on the scale. Use the charts that were completed in class or on the previous slides to help you.
