1 Smart sun protection. EXIT START

2 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
When summer approaches, some of us look forward to getting a beautiful tan. Many people believe a tanned look makes us look healthier and radiant. But actually, sunbathing can be very harmful to your skin. And to your health. the sun • UV rays • sun damages

3 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
The sun radiates Ultra Violet Radiation (UV). The UV rays that penetrate the skin are UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. UVC doesn’t penetrate atmosphere and therefore has no affect on the skin. Infrared rays (IR) – contributes to photoaging UV C (short)  nm UVB (medium) nm UVA (long) nm the sun • UV rays • sun damages

4 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
The Sun damages UVA rays radiate in abundance at the earth’s surface. UVA rays have a long wave length (400 nm–315 nm) and, while present for longer periods throughout the day, they don’t necessarily cause burning. epidermis dermis 400 nm–315 nm the sun • UV rays • sun damages

5 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
The Sun damages UVA rays possess higher radiant energy and cause oxidative damage to cell membranes, proteins and lipids. They travel deep into the dermis layer of the skin, damaging the collagen and elastin cells and challenging the skin’s immune system. epidermis dermis the sun • UV rays • sun damages

6 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
The Sun damages UVB rays are less abundant at the earth’s surface than UVA rays. They cause sunburn on your skin. UVB rays are shorter rays (medium length 315 nm–280 nm) that reach the earth during the intense sun hours. They damage the epidermis quickly but cause longer term dermal changes as well. epidermis dermis the sun • UV rays • sun damages

7 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
The Sun damages UVB rays are as dangerous as UVA rays and cause DNA damage, reduction in cell synthesis, repair and overall cell health. Repeated exposure to UVB rays leads to an increased risk of skin cancer. epidermis dermis the sun • UV rays • sun damages

8 the sun • UV rays • sun damages
The Sun damages Infrared rays are thermal waves We feel it as heat. Ex: sunlight, a fire, etc. Infrared rays have a long wave length (760–1440 nm) Historically not studied as much as UV rays They travel deep into the dermis layer of the skin. Leads to damage of skin structures resulting in aged appearance. epidermis dermis dermis the sun • UV rays • sun damages

What are the damages? UVA and UVB rays can cause: Skin rash Wrinkles and dark pigmented spots Premature aging Skin cancer IR rays can cause: Photoaging Dermal inflammation Photocarcinogenesis. the sun • UV rays • sun damages

10 The Sun at its most powerful
The stronger the sun radiation, the higher risk there is for skin damage. In fact, more than 90% of all skin cancers occur on sun-exposed skin. the sun • UV rays • sun damages

11 The Sun at its most powerful
Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. the sun’s radiation is more intense because of its perpendicular penetration through the atmosphere. The nearer to the Equator, the stronger the sun is at all times. the sun • UV rays • sun damages

12 Know your skin type In order to understand how vulnerable your skin is to sun damage, you must know your individual skin type to sun exposure. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect

13 Young Skin Many adult skin problems may begin with childhood sunburn.
Protecting children from the sun is especially important, since most of our lifetime exposure occurs before the age of 20. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect

14 Young Skin Babies under 12 months should be exposed to limited sun.
Cover up young children as much as possible in addition to protecting with a 30 SPF sunscreen. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect

15 Young Skin Remember! Protective capacity of clothing is reduced when it is wet. Apply a sunscreen 15 minutes prior to sun exposure Some experts recommend reapply after 30 minutes after being in the sun. Make sure to re-apply sunscreen when your children are playing by the pool or at the beach. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect

16 Protect your skin Even if your skin is not burning, it may still be experiencing effects of UVA rays. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is an indication of protection from UVB rays. The SPF number indicates how long you can stay in the sun, without burning. PA stands for protection grade of UVA system and is the Japanese measurement of sun protection, which is based on the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) reaction reading at 2-4 hours of sun exposure.  According to info from the wiki, the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) method is a method of measuring UVA protection, similar to the SPF method of measuring UVB light protection. These are the three levels of protection that are commonly seen: PA+, PA++ and PA+++.  PA+ provides some UVA protection with a factor of PPD 2-4 PA++ provides moderate UVA protection with a factor of PPD 4-8 PA+++ provides good UVA protection with a factor of PPD > 8 Which means, you’re better off picking a sunscreen with PA+++ which will provide you with the greatest protection.  All of our products have both UVA and UVB protection, however the PA+++ rating system is included on the label in only some markets. The US FDA is currently undergoing a change in the rating system for sun protection products and is going to require both UVB and UVA protection level to be listed; the UVB will remain SPF, but the UVA will be listed as stars. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect

17 Burning when and where you least expect...
Local conditions, place and time influence the risk exposure for burning your skin. Even on overcast days you can still burn. UVA and UVB rays can penetrate through clouds. UV rays intensify the higher in altitude you are, which increases the risk of burning your skin. Most people forget to use sunscreen when being outdoors relaxing, gardening or exercising. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect

18 Burning when and where you least expect...
When you are swimming: UV rays can penetrate several meters under water. If you are in water over 20 minutes without reapplying a sunscreen, your skin is more likely to burn. When you are on a reflective surface: For example: On water, under a white parasol or on the sand, UV rays are reflected onto your skin. That’s why you can also burn in the shade. know your skin tanning type • tip for young skin • estimate your SPF • burning when you least expect
