www.persisi.org Introduction To Singapore Silat Federation Singapore Silat Federation was formed in 1976 and is registered with the Registry of Societies. There is an estimated 15 000 Pencak Silat practitioners in Singapore Pencak Silat is one of the 8 “Identified” sports selected by Singapore Sports Council to be housed at the New Sports hub in 2011.

www.persisi.org Introduction To Pencak Silat Pencak Silat is a traditional Martial Art which has its roots from the Malayan & Indonesian archipelago. It translates to "fighting by many techniques of self-defence" There are four main components – Mental Spirit Art & Culture Self-Defence Sport. The large varieties of techniques that can be used in Pencak Silat encapsulate its uniqueness.

www.persisi.org Objectives: “Silat Goes To School” To have Pencak Silat introduced as a CCA in all schools in Singapore. Currently, only Northland Primary School and Monfort Junior School have adopted Pencak Silat as a CCA. To bring Pencak Silat to a greater level of participation by promoting it as a universal sport in the local community, regardless of age, gender and race. To cultivate a sporting culture in schools by making sports a way of life

www.persisi.org Benefits of Introducing Pencak Silat In Schools Pencak Silat is a form of martial art that will instill discipline and self- esteem in the students. It will also improve the student’s confidence and focus. As we are promoting Pencak Silat to all races, this will improve inter- racial cohesion among the students. Schools will bask in glory when students do well in Pencak Silat competitions. In future, Pencak Silat students may be selected to represent Singapore in inter-school games. (MOE, Malaysian Invitation) Schools will be able to use the Pencak Silat students for performances at schools’ and national events.

www.persisi.org Safety Aspect of Pencak Silat We are promoting basic self-defence techniques in schools, placing great emphasis on artistic skills and movement. We take safety VERY seriously: ALL instructors are First-Aid certified and hold a minimum of National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) Level1. NCAP is an accreditation given by SSC to National Coaches. Basic combat and self-defence techniques will be taught to the students. Coaching mitts and padding will be used during training. There will be NO sparring and exchanges of blows among the students until they reach a certain degree of proficiency for upgrading of belting system

www.persisi.org What is needed to have Pencak Silat started in my school? Singapore Silat Federation will provide the coaching expertise. A liaison teacher to assist in liaising between the school and the Pencak Silat Coach. Any open space will do, e.g school hall, basketball/badminton court, open field. Students will need to purchase a set of uniform which is deductible via Edusave.
