2 Networking Components - Hub
A hub is a common point of connecting devices in a local area network. They can be passive, intelligent, or switching conduits for packet traffic All hubs Contain multiple access ports. A passive hub will act as a simple pipeline for the data, enabling it to go from one device or segment to another. An intelligent (active) hub has richer features that allow unique port configuration and traffic monitoring. A switching hub, or switch, will read the packet’s address and forward a packet to a specific port. Price range varies based on port count: (4-port) to (8-port) All devices can freely communicate and share information in this wired configuration as part of the same local network.

3 Networking Components - Switch
Similar to a hub, a switch controls the flow of traffic based on specific packet address information Hubs will repeat packet information to all ports and devices. Switches will only forward packets to a specific port identified by the packet’s destination address. This allows simultaneous communication, and improved bandwidth by reducing unnecessary network traffic thru the switch. Price range varies based on port count: (8-port) to (16-port) Switches are more common on larger (50 users or more) networks. Switches and hubs create networks. Routers connect those networks. Routers connect two or more networks and forward packet information between them according to packet header addresses and routing tables. 5 Networking Components – Bridge
Routers connect two or more networks using routable protocols. Bridges can connect two local area networks using non-routable protocols. Bridges connect Non-routable protocols, like netbios, using a bridging table to track devices, and filter packets based on physical address. They divide a network into a series of collision domains – reducing packet collision and increasing bandwidth. This is handy for small networks that may connect via dsl, isdn, or wireless access point to an internet service provider. Price range varies based on port count: (4-port) to (WIRELESS) Routers use ip and ipx protocols to communicate between multiple networks. Bridges only use physical (mac) addresses to communicate. 6 Networking Components – Gateway
A network gateway joins two networks that use different base protocols. A GATEWAY CAN ACT AS A ROUTER OR PROXY SERVER BETWEEN NETWORKS. IT IS GENERALLY EQUIPPED TO INTERFACE WITH ANOTHER NETWORK THAT USES DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS. A dedicated gateway can also be used for security reasons (e.g. a firewall) Price range varies widely based on WIRED/WIRELESS MODELS & SECURITY FEATURES PROVIDED: to Gateway rule: your gateway should belong to the same subnet to which your pc belongs. 7 Networking Components – Firewall
A firewall monitors all data packets flowing in and out of the network. Firewalls, whether hardware- or software-based, utilize filtering tables to analyze the packets of data traffic and determine if they should be allowed through the network or not, based on an applied set of rules. A WAP is a wireless access point. Waps are devices that allow other wireless-capable devices to connect to a network. Wireless access points can be used to connect to a wired network router A Single ieee wap can potentially communicate with 30 clients at a radius of 100 meters.
