3 Why participate in Modern Languages’ International Intern/Co-op Program? Full year program in another culture Academic studies in 2 nd language strengthen skills and count toward degree International work experience in your field immerses you further in 2 nd culture Enrolled as full-time GT student

4 How does the international internship program work? Students apply to one of the five language tracks offered through Department of Modern Languages. Juniors or seniors selected on basis of grades, language ability, maturity, knowledge of field, and match to sponsoring employer needs Study abroad one semester using 2 nd language. Academic courses taken at partnering institution; courses approved prior to departure. Register in GT Study Abroad course Remain abroad working back-to-back semesters in major field. Register in GT International Intern course Finish degree requirements at Ga. Tech.

5 What is Undergraduate Professional Internship? The Undergraduate Professional Internship Program was established at Georgia Tech in Spring 2003 Undergraduate Professional Internships place students in professional work settings Provides practical work experience in the field of study Internship is a partnership between:  Students  Employers  Georgia Tech

6 UPI Program Requirements Completion of 30 hours of academic coursework  Transfer students must complete 1 semester of full-time study at Georgia Tech Acceptance into the Undergraduate Professional Internship Program (UIP) Attend the mandatory UIP orientation session Have at least a minimum 2.0 GPA  Have no failing grades for the term immediately preceding your work assignment Complete a full course load during the term immediately preceding your work assignment

7 How Does This Program Work If I Am An Intern? Interns study their freshman and sophomore year at Ga Tech while learning a 2 nd language - one of the five language tracks offered through Department of Modern Languages Study abroad one semester using 2 nd language. Academic courses taken at partnering institution; courses approved prior to departure. Register in GT Study Abroad course Work two internship work semesters back-to-back. Register in GT International UPI course Finish degree requirements at Ga. Tech.

8 International Intern Program Typical Non Co-op Schedule: Students study five semesters at Ga. Tech while improving 2 nd language. Study abroad one semester using 2 nd language. Remain abroad working back-to-back semesters in major field. Finish degree requirements at Ga. Tech.

9 What is Co-op?  Co-op is an academic program that combines theory with practice  Five year program, includes 4 years of studies and 1 ½ years of related work  Minimum of 4 work terms required  Work each term with same employer  Employment is related to major & is paid  No tuition paid to GT during work terms  Notation on diploma for Co-op graduates

10 How does this program work if I am a Co-op? Co-ops work three semesters in USA while learning 2 nd language - one of the five language tracks offered through Department of Modern Languages Study abroad one semester using 2 nd language. Academic courses taken at partnering institution; courses approved prior to departure. Register in GT Study Abroad course Work final two co-op work semesters back-to-back (preferably with same employer as in U.S.) Register in GT International co-op course Finish degree requirements at Ga. Tech. Receive International Co-op designation on diploma

12 Role of Co-op/Intern Advisor Review your resume and advise for international resume/CV format Guidance through work visa process Complete paperwork needed to assign employer Confirm course registration Monitor your work performance and academic progress throughout your international work experience
