1 Mission Statement: The Rehabilitation Nurses Society is a membership organization that provides continuing education and networking for medical care coordination. The professional goal of its members is to advocate for quality patient care while utilizing community resources in a cost effective manner. July 2010 July 2010 Come join friends and colleagues for a time of lunch and learning! July’s Educational Topic Industrial Rehabilitation presented by Laura Nugent Laura will present a program that will help the rehabilitation-minded professional become knowable about the different components of industrial rehabilitation, which include physical therapy, ergonomics, work conditioning, work hardening and functional capacity evaluations. We’ll learn when we would use specific pieces of the industrial rehab program and how they will benefit our patient populations. Laura is a physical therapy assistant employed with ProActive Physical Therapy in Carlsbad, where she was responsible for building and marketing the industrial component of ProActive Physical Therapy that many of us use today. She is a supervising exercise specialist for out-patient, orthopedic patients. She is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and obtained her PTA degree at San Diego Mesa College in San Diego. She is licensed by the state of California. 2 President’s Message By Renae Paulson, RN July 1, 2010 Dear RNS Members and Friends, July tends to be the beginning the hottest weather season in So CA. So hot, that for some of us we can’t imagine going to the desert resorts during the summer. Even the beach, with all the sun and water, can become scary. There is a lot of controversy about the benefits of sun block products that offer SP greater than 30 and discussions about the potentially harmful effects of the tanning booths. I recently even saw a lightweight UV protection shirt to wear in the sun for UV protection. It seems that getting those tans to look healthier may NOT actually be a healthy choice. Whatever your preference is to change the way you look on the outside can be a feeble, even dangerous, attempt to impress the onlooker. What impresses me and revitalizes me is kindness. Kindness that comes from the heart and tongue. Pleasantness communicated with sincerity. A genuine interest and concern for another’s well-being. Stepping out of your comfort zone to offer hope and compassion to a stranger. Acts of good will that offers no recognition to the performer of the good deed. Experiencing any one of these actions keep me coming back for more. When I am the recipient of any one of these encounters I feel so blessed and uplifted I become motivated to ‘pay it forward’. Imagine yourself basking in the effects of kindness that immediately allows you to relax and create a restful harmony that resembles a vacation in a sun- filled resort on the coast of Hawaii. Now this would be a safe vacation with benefits! And in your own backyard! I hope that you will have a kind encounter that brightens your day. Pass it on! As RNS was dark in June, I trust that some of you had the opportunity to attend the CMSA conference in OC to learn about some controversial subjects. To all of our business partners I wish to again express my appreciation for your faithfulness to RNS. Your company offers a very valuable service for us and our patients. Your expertise helps ensure that we are coordinating care beyond the status quo. Thank you heartily for the “fun” raffle that you bless us with every month! Stay well and I hope to see you at the RNS meeting on July 22, 2010. Renae Paulson, RN RNS President
