WP1: Mapping and Analysis of Research and Innovation and Update of the Strategic Research Agenda Jack Verhoosel, TNO Jan Erpenbach, BLE Christophe Guizard, IRSTEA Markus Loetscher, FOAG jack.verhoosel@tno.nl ict-agri.eu

Goals of WP1 1.To produce 3 annual action plans for the implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda. First action plan ready in month 8, i.e. end August 2014. Target groups of the action plans are: ▫ ICT-AGRI2 WP2 for new calls ▫ European RTD and innovation programs and standardization bodies (H2020, EIP) ▫ National scale RTD and innovation programs. 2.To extensively interact with the complete chain of stakeholders from research to application ▫ Research, manufacturing, IT suppliers, service providers, consumers, farmers, etc. ▫ All participants are engaged in national mapping. ▫ Joint workshops are held with alternating main organisers. 3.To compile the collected information and to produce an updated Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda at the end of the project.

WP1 Tasks Task 1.1: Interdisciplinary research and innovation (BLE) ▫ Focus on stimulation of new forms of combined innovation actions between research organisations and sector organisations (industry as well as farmers) Task 1.2: Compatibility of ICT and Robotics in agriculture (TNO) ▫ Focus on current landscape of standardisation of ICT in agriculture in entire supply chain and actions to improve adoption Task 1.3: Support interaction with stakeholders in the ICT-AGRI chain (IRSTEA) ▫ Focus on improving the involvement of all kinds of stakeholders in the ICT, robotics and agriculture domain to the ERA-NET Task 1.4: Update of the Strategic Research Agenda (FOAG) ▫ Focus on addition of new research and innovation actions to the SRA

What is an action plan? Focusses on one or more agricultural challenges, problems and subsectors. Select one or two SRA topics to focus on in first year action plan. Detailed analysis of the opportunities and hindrances for further progress of the use of ICT and robotics for a sustainable and competitive agriculture. Suggests for research, development, innovation and standardization actions to stimulate solutions. Contains information about appropriate call mechanisms as discussed with stakeholders. Targets at WP2 calls, European RTD and innovation programs and standardization bodies, such Horizon 2020, European Innovation Partnerships.

How to select action plan topics? Agricultural sector: Arable farming Dairy farming Lifestock farming Pig farming Greenhouses etc.…..

Possible actions for the plan? Calls under ICT-AGRI2 Joint call with PPPs or other ERA-NETS ICT-AGRI topics for projects under Horizon2020 Using EIP via multi-actor projects thematic networks Focus groups of experts for problem descriptions Generic call topics as well as specific call topics Stimulate adoption of use of standards Influence standardisation bodies on workitems ….

Must be Clear Addin Value For a market Suggest an interest Listen to No time to lose How to involve stakeholders? SRA Workshop Survey (Questionnaires) Survey (Questionnaires) Thematic networks, Focus groups

Mobilise organisations and companies Map Organisations and Companies Targets Create Online survey Online survey Map the main stakeholders Phone call National Workshop Report mapping Use Social network Create a place to collect ideas Help is needed Partners : Help is needed SRA

How to motivate stakeholders? Incentives to involve them: Funding! Impact on action plan topics Impact on priorities in calls Invitation to focus group Interaction with other stakeholders and peers ….? Tips and tricks: Use higher political levels …..

Discussion and questions

Task 1.1: Interdisciplinary research and innovation (BLE) Objective: To achieve interdisciplinary research and innovation as recommended in the SRA. Result: Actions for stimulation of research & innovation, e.g.: ▫ Calls under ICT Agri II ▫ Common Call with PPP (ICT-Agri I) or other ERA-Nets ▫ Knowledge Hub (bringing together existing research projects) ▫ ICT projects under Horizon 2020 ▫ Using EIP via multi-actor projects and thematic networks – (Pigwise, 3D-Mosaic) Activities: Development of important topics in the SRA into research/innovation needs and proposals for solution domains. Discussion of proposals with relevant stakeholders. Conceptual description of complete solutions for ICT and robotics in agriculture. Mapping of research and innovation based on conceptual solutions.

Task 1.2: Compatibility of ICT and robotics in agriculture (TNO) Objective: To identify the major actors required for establishment and implementation of standardisation and to identify strategic actions that will enhance a broad acceptance and use of standards. Result: A good overview of how current IT and robotics systems interoperate and how standardisation is being used. Indication of important gaps in this standardisation landscape and actions on how they can be tackled. Main activities: Study the available sources for current standardisation of ICT and robotics. Identify and interact with the important stakeholders (workshop at SmartAgriFood 2014). Identify actions to improve implementation and take up of ICT and robotics in agriculture.

Task 1.3: Support interaction with stakeholders (IRSTEA) Objective To mobilise the expertise in organisations and companies supplying farmers with ICT and robotics for internal farm purposes, business transactions or administrative communication. The stakeholders include food chains, public services, advisory services, software houses, machine manufacturers (multinational, SMEs, farmers, EIP Operational Groups) Issues concerning funding, IP rights and commercialisation will be addressed. Results: Format for online input of mapping data in the MKB together with WP4. Mapping of research and innovation needs at national level. Main activities: Organise and monitor mapping on the national level by ICT-AGRI-2 partners Map the main stakeholders and their ICT solutions on the European level Organise a variety of interactions for consultation of stakeholders (workshops, surveys, interviews, etc.)

Task 1.4: Update of the SRA (FOAG) Objective: To provide an updated and further developed version of the SRA in which all the new insights gained by the performance of ICT-AGRI-2 tasks. The new version of the SRA will contain recommendations beyond the lifetime of ICT-AGRI-2. Result: Update Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda Main activities are: Draft the strategic agenda on basis of solution pathways highlighted in the action plans. Organise a workshop for consultation of stakeholders with the updated strategic agenda Publish the updated Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda
