4 3/4/14Class Notes – renting an apartment lease: contract signed between renter & landlord; legally binding 1-year, 6-month, month-to-month… tenant: person living in rented apartment or house landlord: person who owns the apartment or house security deposit: money given to landlord before moving in Covers costs of potential damages, unpaid rent, etc. Landlord gives money back when you move out

5 3/4/14Class Notes – renting an apartment utilities: refers to bills such as heat, electricity, water, garbage, etc. Always ask what utilities you have to pay for! sublease or sublet: someone else lives in your apartment & pays rent when you are not there some contracts allow this, others don’t

6 3/4/14Class Notes – renting an apartment What determines house/apartment prices? 3 factors: Location, location, location! 1.Location to Points of Interest (POI) How close to schools, stores, transportation, entertainment, dining, etc. 2.Location of neighborhood How nice is neighborhood? How safe are you? Are there parks & playgrounds? 3.Location of apartment What floor? Corner apartment?

7 3/4/14Class Notes – renting an apartment What determines house/apartment prices continued… Other factors: 1.Size of apartment Square footage, # of bedrooms & bathrooms, etc. “Studio” = no separate bedroom (apt. all one room) 2.Amenities Outdoor space, washer/dryer, dishwasher, air conditioning, fitness center or pool, etc.

8 3/4/14Class Notes – renting an apartment How do I find an apartment? 1.“Apartment for Rent” signs – call and go see it! 2.Online – call and go see it! Rental agencies or brokers may charge a fee Craigslist, etc. usually no fee ANYONE CAN POST ANYTHING ON CRAIGSLIST!!
