3  Established in late 1860’s  Originally owned by A.J. McClellan and R.T. Morrison  Flourished as a shrimping and seafood town  Town Website: “A self- sufficient community of schools, homes, churches, shops, and docking facilities with an economy largely dependant upon the sea.”  Noted for historically valuable plantations

4  Devastated much of the town  Taken by surprise  Destroyed seafood industry  McClellanville 20 years after Hugo McClellanville 20 years after Hugo

5  The site of several classic films  Forest Gump  Paradise  And coming soon to a theater near you, maybe, The New Daughter!

8  Land Purchased by Daniel Horry in 1744  Throughout mid-1700’s the plantation was developed  Used as a refuge throughout the Revolutionary War  Guarded Francis Marion and was searched twice by the British during the war  Visited by George Washington after the war.

9  Managed throughout the first half of the 19 th century by primarily women  Following the Civil War, plantation managed by Henry Middleton Rutledge  H.M. Rutledge bequeaths plantation to son, Archibald Rutledge.  In 1971, Rutledge gave plantation to the South Carolina State Parks Service

10  Born at Hampton Plantation in 1883  Spent his childhood exploring the plantation  First poem ◦ “Today I saw a rattlesnake Too young to make its rattlers shake”  Attended school and eventually attended Union College

11  Became an English teacher in 1904 at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania  Did not move back until 1837 following his retirement  Began renovations on Hampton Plantation  Lived out his days on the plantation with his family  In 1971, gave plantation to Parks Service

12  Most noted publication titled Deep River: The Complete Poems of Archibald Rutledge ◦ Nominated for Pulitzer Prize  Published fiction, poetry, articles, and autobiography  In 1934 became the first poet laureate of South Carolina  Namesake of Archibald Rutledge Academy and the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Fund

13  Often wrote about nature themes  Noted for his hunting stories  Rutledge on Rutledge: “My formula is to find a subject worth writing about and then to make it simple, and then to make it clear and then to make it reach the heart and then to make it beautiful.”
