2 What is the meaning of the word Diwali?
The word Diwali comes from an Indian word ‘Deepavali’ ‘Deepa’ means light and ‘Avali means a Row, (a row of lights)

3 What is Diwali. Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights
What is Diwali? Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights. The festival marks the start of the Hindu New Year. Sikhs and Jains also celebrate Diwali.

4 When people celebrate Diwali?
Diwali happens in October or November depending on the Lunar Calendar. It is a five day festival and People celebrate each day in a special way. Day one Hindu offers sweets to Yama Raj (Lord of death) lights and fire crackers and lamps are kept burning throughout the night.

5 Day two This the day that Lord Krishna killed the Demon Narkaur
Day two This the day that Lord Krishna killed the Demon Narkaur. People bath and rub oil to their skin. Parents give new cloths and jewellery to their children.

6 Day 3 This day devoted to Lakshmi the goddess of wealth
Day 3 This day devoted to Lakshmi the goddess of wealth. Bells and drums are played at temples people clean their homes for Lakshmi.

7 Day 4 People remember when Krishna picked up Govardhan mountain and used it as an umbrella to protect people from a huge flood many years ago. In the temple mountains of food is called ‘Annakoot’

8 Day 5 This is the last day of Diwali and is dedicated to sisters
Day 5 This is the last day of Diwali and is dedicated to sisters. Brothers and sisters give each other presents like sweets and clothes. Sisters put Teeka (a red spot) on their brother’s forehead.

9 Diwali is a very colourful and exciting festival
Diwali is a very colourful and exciting festival. People wake up early and have fun making colourful Rangoli traditional patterns. Homes decorated with flowers and pretty oil lamps, people go for prayers. The streets are really lively at this time, with parties and dance and fire works

10 we are proud to be part of a Multicultural society.
