2. Learning Objectives
Understand what online grooming is and to be able to identify IF it happens to you

3. What is online grooming
Online grooming  involves a person (adult) making contact with young people with the intention of persuading them into online or offline sexual activity using mobile and online technologies through online chat rooms, instant messaging, social networking sites and many more
Online groomers…
usually find and choose their victims online.
always lie about quite a lot of things about themselves to convince the young person to be friends with them online (usually their age to begin with).
once they have made contact with the young person and have gained the young person’s trust, usually want to meet the young person on their own either offline or online via webcam.
Online grooming is a criminal offence!

4. What can you do to prevent online grooming?
DO NOT give away personal contact details
STOP chatting to the person online if questions of a sexual nature arise, and STOP uncomfortable conversations
SAVE copies of conversations, if possible
SAY NO to face-to-face meetings if something seems suspicious and, if you do decide to meet somebody face-to-face, ALWAYS take your parent or a trusted adult along with you and ALWAYS inform your parents/carer of where you are going.
DO NOT leave your personal details on websites or blogs (e.g. name of your school, home address, the youth centre you attend, age, school year, mobile number, telephone number, address etc.)

5. REMEMBER:
There is ALWAYS someone you can talk to you if something like this has happened or is happening to you.

6. Where to get help… (taken from the Challenge e-safety guide)
At school...
If something online is upsetting you then tell Miss Murray, Assistant Head Teacher, your form tutor or another member of staff. If you find it difficult to tell a teacher then speak to a friend who you can trust and ask them to tell a teacher on your behalf.
Tell an adult or your parent/carer if someone is asking you do something you are not comfortable with. If you can’t speak to an adult then speak to a friend who you can trust and ask them to tell an adult. Remember it won’t go away if you don’t tell someone you trust.
At home...
Online...
Finally, if you see the CEOP report button you can click on it to anonymously report someone that is making you uncomfortable when online.

Have a look at the online grooming newspaper article and create a newsletter outlining the following items:
A brief summary of the article and what online grooming is
(draw) An appropriate image
how to prevent it happening to you
Where you can get help
