2 This course would be for undergraduate music majors with an interest in the anthropology of folk music in America. The class would run for a semester. Evaluation of the learning of materials would be dependent on midterm and final grades, papers written during the semester, and teacher evaluations at the end of the semester.

3 Course Description An introduction to the anthropology of folk music in the United States. The course will examine: – Early historical information about folk music – History and evolution of folk music in the U.S. – Appalachian, Western, and Southern folk music – Other regional types of folk music found throughout the U.S. – Cultural trends within folk music – Folk music revivals – Commercialization of folk music in current culture

4 Learning Outcomes 1.Obtaining an understanding of the origins, history, and timeline of American folk music 2.Identify cultural trends and regional music throughout the U.S. 3.Demonstrate a knowledge of the American folk revivals in the 1930s and 1960s 4.Discuss why the commercialization of folk music has a cultural impact on America
