5. Justification  The act of God whereby He declares the believing sinner righteous in Christ on the basis of the finished work of Christ on the cross.  Free from guilt or penalty of sin

6. Righteousness  Righteousness of Christ includes his spotless holiness, His perfect obedience the law demands

7. Sanctification  Process God makes believers more and more like Christ  The act of making a thing more pure and holy

8. Salvation  The spiritual deliverance from sin and death through the Redeemer

9. Reconciliation  A change from enmity to friendship  The death of Christ satisfies justice, and so reconciles God to us;  makes God our friend, and  enables him to pardon and save us

12. Romans Chapter Summary:  Romans 1:1-17 -- introduction to the author and his credentials for writing this message/letters  Romans 1:18-32 --this section describes how we have all sinned and fallen from God's standard. Paul talks about the idea of God's wrath as God just stepping back and letting us do what we desire. He gives up on us.  Romans 2 -- this chapter was about judging, how the Jews were judging spirituality based on external practices, ex. Circumcision. It also talks about obedience to the law.

13.  Romans 3 -- Paul asks the question of what advantage there is to being a Jew. The main point is that we are saved by faith and we gain righteousness.  Romans 4 -- Paul uses the example of Abraham to show the importance of faith BEFORE works.  Romans 5 –Paul focused on the idea of reconciliation. What has God done to build a relationship with his people -- he died while we were sinners, sent Jesus to be the new Adam, and as sin has grown, God has given more grace

14.  Romans 6 -- Paul uses two illustrations to describe how sin binds us -- the example of baptism and the example of being a slave – (Aaron’s illustration)  Romans 7 -- shows our relationship with the Law. Without the law, we do not know what is wrong therefore it shows us how to live. Paul also shows us that it is impossible for us the keep the Law on our own merit.  Romans 8 -- goes with Romans 7 because it reveals thankfulness to God for rescuing us from the cycle of sin. There are 8 promises in this chapter of how God saves us.

15.  Romans 9-11 -- shows God's arbitrary character. First he chose Israel then He rejects them because they did not recognize the Messiah and so the Gentiles can get his message. Finally Paul shows that they can both function together if their roots are Jesus. Paul uses the example of grafting wild olives onto domestic trees.  Romans 12 -- talks about how we should be living sacrifices and how God gives spiritual gifts to serve others and share His love.  Romans 13 -- remember our bus field trip:). Showing us how to be neighbours and contributing citizens. Wake up and stop being distracted!  Romans 14-15 -- Paul describes weak Christians and strong Christians and gives a message to both sides.  Romans 16 -- conclusion that Paul shows characteristics of the early Christian church.

16.  Church Issues  The whole book is Paul talking to a specific group of people and helping them into true Christianity  Issues in Paul’s time – Jew/Gentile, Circumcision, law, worship, love/serving  Think about a church issue you believe is happening right now.
