4 PURPOSE: PANDEMIC FLU OUTBREAKS THROUGHOUT HISTORY Flu Pandemic of 1918-1919: AKA Spanish Flu. H1N1 500 million infected 50-100 million deaths 1957-1958: Identified in the Far East. Came to the US. H2N2 2 million deaths worldwide 1968-1969: Hong Kong. Similar to strain that causes flu pandemic in 1957. H3N2 1 million deaths 209-2010: H1N1(Swine Flu) New H1N1 strain

5 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Establish preparedness organization/sites/committees Assess current preparedness/Quarantine protocol& policy Create coalitions between CDC, public emergency and medical care organizations Conduct risk assessment Education

6 RISK ASSESSMENT: IRAT: Influenza Risk Assessment Tool Assess potential pandemic risk that currently present in animals and not humans. Risk of ability to spread easily. Severity of human disease caused by virus(deaths/hospitalizations) Burden to society (missed workdays, strain on hospital..etc.)
