What is

It’s whatever you want it to be? Be creative! Be collaborative! Work together Use it in your other subjects What is

Getting Started Before you can start using Minecraft, you need to make sure that you set up your blank work. There are different worlds available in Minecraft and you need to make sure you are in the right mode. – CREATIVE – You can make what you like without worrying about Steve dying - * WE’RE USING THIS MODE* – SURVIVAL – You have to harvest your materials from the world which is slightly more challenging. – HARDCORE – You have a single life, if you lose it then you can’t continue.

STEP 1 – Click on “Singleplayer”

STEP 2 – Click Create New World

STEP 3 – Name your world and choose creative

STEP 4 – Change your “World Type” to “Super Flat” and click “Done”

Your flat world is ready

Can’t quite remember? Use this worksheet to remind you how to set up your own creative mode. It should be quite easy to follow and shows you the basic steps. Your teacher will show you where to find this.

Some of the basics

Tinker Time! Your are now given 5 minutes to have a play with the flat world and to see what blocks you can find and create in your inventory

Task 1 : - House Time You’re required to build a house for Steve. It must meet the following requirements: – 4 sides – Roof – 2 windows on each side – Door – Extension: Try to create a library for books Experiment with Red Stone to build switches for doors and lights in the house.

Task 1 : - Having Trouble? Your teacher has produced a simple user guide which will help you through the basics. It explains which keys are used and how to navigate! Don’t get frustrated when you click the wrong mouse button, it happens to us ALL! Your teacher will pick the amount of time for this activity!

Task 2: - Hello World! We’re going to add a computer into our house or whatever you’ve managed to complete. Computers allow us to program things in the environment and we can manipulate things. We can even create programs to build the house for us, so that we don’t have to spend us much time doing it!

Task 2: - Hello World! Type ‘E’ to bring up your inventory and click on the compass, this allows you to search. Search for the computer and add it into your inventory. Now add your computer to your world…..REMEMBER TO RIGHT CLICK

Task 2: - Hello World! Right click to bring up the code window. This will turn on the computer.

Task 2: - Hello World! This is the computers prompt menu and where we’ll type our code

Task 2: - Hello World! Type in Edit hello This gives you your program called hello which you can edit. Type in the line on the left. Hold down ‘CTRL’ and press ‘ENTER’ to save your program. Hold Down ‘CTRL’ and move the arrow keys to the right to exit your coding.

Task 2: - Hello World! Type in ‘hello’ – This is what we called our program earlier and it will run the script we’ve typed up already. You can see that the program now runs ‘Hello, world!’. Task 2: - See if you can get your computers to have different programs. Try and have multiple programs in your house which might say different things. Extension: - Can you find out how to include a variable which asks for an input?

Finishing Up! You’ve all had time to build a Minecraft world with a house and some computers. Swap computers and share your code with others. If people have had difficulties with their program, help them. If you know something more about Minecraft, share this. 5 minutes – Then share your experience with your teacher.
