Grade level: 3rd Grade Summary: The purpose of this powerpoint is to introduce the students to Mexican facts and different aspects of Mexican culture. Objective: Given websites and video clips about Mexican culture, TSW recall knowledge through quiz questions with 100% accuracy. Standard: 3.14 Interpret different texts and primary sources to describe the major components of culture including language, clothing, food, art, beliefs, customs, and music. (C, H)

3 Facts about Mexico: Click here to learn facts about the country of Mexico. Mexico was conquered and colonized by Spain in the early 16th century; then, Mexico won its independence in the early 19th century, a historic event still celebrated by Mexicans every September 16th. As of 2014, Mexico has a population of 120 million people, which makes the country ranked the 11th most populated country in the world. Mexico is the largest Spanish speaking country in the world; however, Spanish is not the only language spoken in Mexico. There are over 68 other indigenous (native) languages still spoken in Mexico, but only 1% of the population speaks these languages.

Mexico is located in North America. Mexico’s main language is Spanish. Mexico is the 11th most populated country in the world. The land of Mexico is diverse with beaches, mountains, deserts, volcanoes, and forests. In the 16th century, Mexico was conquered by Spain. Mexico gained its independence in the 19th century.

12 And also, Mexican food is usually spicy and some typical Mexican dishes are: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, and beans. Fiestas (or festivals) are an important part of Mexican culture. The main fiestas of Mexico are: Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo, and the Day of the Dead. Mexican people are polite and do not like to speak in a way that could be considered rude to others. Also, business transactions take longer in Mexico because they do not like to rush. The most famous type of Mexican music is mariachi, which consists of trumpets, guitars, violins, vihuelas, guitarrons, and a harp.
