Comprehension Check Chapter 7 The Great GatsbyComprehension CheckChapter 7
Gatsby fires all his servants so they wouldn‘t spread rumors about Daisy‘s regular visits. While Tom is on the phone in the other room, Daisy kisses Gatsby. She tells Jordan to kiss Nick. She is trying live dangerously - possibly trying to get caught, or at the very least, get back at Tom for being with his mistress while she has someone also
Daisy’s relationship with her daughter is aloof, distant, there to be shown off like a prize. Gatsby is surprised by the child’s existence because he never believed that Daisy could be capable of having a baby with Tom, or he imagines that Pammy could have been his own.
Gatsby says Daisy’s voice is full of money; it rings with a sort of charm, there is a “song” to it. Wilson suddenly needs money from Tom because he discovers that Myrtle was having an affair and wants to take her away.
Weather contributes to the mood of the chapter - Heat is stifling, suffocating; with the mounting pressure, something will have to break soon.Daisy tells Gatsby that she also loved Tom, and this catches him off guard. He was expecting her to say that she wanted to leave Tom and marry Gatsby
Nick remembers his 30th Birthday Nick remembers his 30th Birthday. It is significant because it is the end of the recklessness and squalor of the 1920sTom believes Gatsby killed Myrtle. Daisy was actually driving and killed her.The “eyes” of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are watching the incidents in the Valley of Ashes. This is symbolic of God.

Nick suggests that Gatsby go away because his car could be traced Nick suggests that Gatsby go away because his car could be traced. He could at the very minimum be in trouble as an accessory and for running away from the crime.Gatsby refuses to leave because he still wants to be there for Daisy and to protect Daisy from Tom; he wants to be with her; he is still hanging on to that hope.
Gatsby met Daisy at Camp Taylor, with other boys from the Army. He was poor, but didn‘t let on that he was poor. He acted as if he had money and belonged in high-society with Daisy.
Daisy kept dating and eventually met Tom Daisy kept dating and eventually met Tom. She decided she wasn‘t going to wait for Gatsby anymore and got engaged and married Tom.
Gatsby went back to Louisville with the last of his Army pay where he met Daisy. He wanted to remember her and retrace the steps of their romance together
Nick says Gatsby is “worth the whole damn bunch put together” because he believes that although Gatsby was shady in his dealings to get where he is, he at least has some integrity, unlike Tom or Daisy or Jordan.Nick was happy he said it because he never would have gotten another chance, since Gatsby was killed and that was the last time Nick saw him alive.
Wilson believed that Myrtle was struck down on purpose by her lover Wilson believed that Myrtle was struck down on purpose by her lover. He believes this because he found the leash, and had threatened to move away.
Wilson really thinks the eyes of Doctor T. J Wilson really thinks the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are the eyes of God watching them. He feels that God “knows” everything.

Nick is in charge of arranging Gatsby’s funeral because he believes that Gatsby had no family and that the state would take over if he didn‘t. This is surprising because Gatsby supposedly had hundreds of friends and colleagues, yet Nick, who just met Gatsby, is the one arranging the funeral.
Henry Gatz hears about the funeral from a Chicago Newspaper. Klipspringer calls Gatsby’s house because he left his shoes at the mansion and wanted Nick to send them.
Mr. Gatz showed Nick the schedule from Gatsby’s youth because he wanted him (and the reader) to see the kind of personal determination Gatsby had.He was meant to become something important, and always had the best intentions.
It was an interesting choice that Fitzgerald had Owl-Eyes come to the funeral. He may have wanted to show that out of all the hundreds of people who came to Gatsby‘s parties, there actually was one unselfish person. The owl-eyed man could have come because he seemed to actually be impressed by Gatsby
Jordan became engaged to another man; Nick wasn‘t surprised, but still loved her. Tom told George that Gatsby owned a yellow car. Tom felt justified because he felt that Gatsby had it coming to him.
Tom and Daisy were careless and cared about only themselves Tom and Daisy were careless and cared about only themselves. When Daisy is put to the test to show her integrity, she and Tom run away to let Nick and others clean up after them.
