6 What actions would make the “possible” become reality? Colleges with less than 30% ANH or female faculty: Each department hires 1 tenured ANH and one tenured female faculty member between 2006 and 2011 Each college retains and promotes one additional ANH assistant professor and one woman compared to past pattern.

9 Some Project Ideas Architecture: increase faculty diversity through strategic recruitment CALS: facilitate department heads’ climate workshops Engineering: incorporate D3 work with her job responsibilities; develop leadership lecture series with luncheons for women faculty Textiles: workshop at reappointment times to reestablish peer group and reset priorities

10 Some Project/Research Ideas – Education:Collect success stories,strategies from tenured female and minority faculty Natural Resources: What factors affect women’s choices to enter leadership roles? CHASS and CALS: collect best practices for improving diversity and retention in these colleges CHASS: develop “invitational” communication strategies for administrators

13 Climate Workshop Series for Department Heads Goal: Cultivate a supportive and inclusive department climate for diverse faculty Why focus on department climate? Satisfaction and desire to stay at NC State strongly related to department satisfaction Negative aspects of dept climate affect faculty outside the mainstream more strongly than others

14 Climate Workshop Series for Department Heads Structure: 3 sessions built around climate survey administered to dept faculty and staff Motivation, effects of climate on retention and recruiting, explanation of the survey Climate survey administered Participants received their dept survey results, shared insights, thoughts Develop action plans, share experiences and suggestions
