9. Online Predators in Australia 25% of children have been exposed to unwanted pornographic material online. The Children Go Online Survey (UK) of 9-19 year olds found that 31% had received sexual comments online and 28% had received unsolicited sexual material. Eight per cent had gone to a meeting with someone first met online (cited in Livingstone & Brake, 2010). According to a May 3, 2006, “ABC News” report, “One in five children is now approached by online predators.” Exploited Children (“The Youth Internet Safety Survey”) that asked 1,501 American teens between 10 and 17 about their online experiences. Among the study’s conclusions: “Almost one in five (19 percent)…received an unwanted sexual solicitation in the past year.”

Online Predators in Texas Although more parents are using filtering, blocking and monitoring software, youth exposed to unwanted sexual material has increased substantially from their survey five years ago. Online harassment has grown 50% in just five years and continues to increase. Internet safety for children is a civic responsibility and must be thought of by parents, schools and the community at large as a “fight for the neighborhood.” When the NCMEC survey asked parents and guardians why they installed filtering, blocking or monitoring software, 51% said a general desire to protect their children from possible online harms.

Internet addiction is when a person has a compulsive need to spend a great deal of time on the internet, to the point where there areas of life (such as relationships, work or health) are allowed to suffer. The person becomes dependent on using the internet and needs to spend more and more time online to achieve the same ‘high’ There is a range of behaviors that can be referred to as internet addictions. Other terms for this addiction include internet addictions disorders (IAD) and net addictions.

This could include having online affairs(‘cyberadultry’) Games- This can include spending excessive amounts of time playing games, gambling, shopping or trading. This can lead to severe financial troubles. Information- the user obsessively searches for and collects information.
